Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

But in art, the aim is to transmit thought and emotion from one human to another. If one of those humans can’t be bothered to do the job, and the other human can’t be arsed to care, you’re only transmitting one emotion:

Contempt.

James Gunn made a movie that says this: people worrying about politics are not the heroes. The people trying to stop mass murder are the heroes.

Taking off my shitposter: the reason we are being SO jokey is we clearly see these terrifying people shouldn't be in charge of everything, are destroying and stealing the entire country, we are powerless to stop it because even the Democrats hate us, and one day people will say no one saw it coming

When you have a tech that its own inventors are claiming will cause 20% unemployment and will destroy publishing, cinema, and the arts, the most rational thing you can do under those circumstances is to demand that the entire thing be nuked from orbit

AI is like plastic. It has some legit uses, yes, but it's really bad for the environment so it should be used as little as possible. Unlike plastic, it's a whole lot easier to restrict it now, because it's only been around a few years rather than ~200. The time to stop it is now.

rewatching FIGHT CLUB this week i was very struck by how a movie that is very plainly a critique of this vision of masculinity was taken up as a valorization of it
It's grim thinking about how many men and women in society have mental models of valorous male behavior that primarily consist of being abusive and violent.
