Enh, this is defeatist.

Will they fight it? Yes. Will they try to get around it? Yes.

Is making it illegal important? Absolutely. Is it a tool that could be used by activists, lawyers, and judges? Yes.
have a feeling that even if the Dems got a strong version of this—against leadership wishes btw!—into a final bill (unlikely) ICE just wouldn't do it and nothing would happen to them
Asked if he would commit to unmasking ICE agents, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons gives a one-word answer in a House hearing today:

"No."

Goldman to Lyons: "You said in your opening statement that references to ICE as 'the Gestapo' or 'secret police' encourages threats against ICE agents. The problem is you have it backwards. People are simply making valid observations about your tactics, which are un-American and outright fascist."

I will reiterate: for every bit of damage, violence, or theatrical incompetence that draws public attention, there are a *thousand* things the Trumpists are doing behind the scenes, outside of public attention, that are just as ruinous to our country and our future.

“Collection of Handwritten Letters from Children in Detention Center” sounds like an exhibit in the Holocaust Museum.
1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

It is. The Jewish Musuem in Prague has a collection of children's drawings from the Terezin ghetto. It was the worst thing I've seen in my life.

Even the (very unlikely) nightmare scenario isn’t Republicans have absolute power. It’s contested results, confusion, and Republicans trying to consolidate power with no idea how as mass protests gather and markets crash.

The old Congress has no power. Many races are on each ballot. Utter chaos.

These people don’t seem to care that people who speak Spanish and are very proud of it are a core part of what put trump back in the White House and are what psyched the gop in to thinking they have a multiracial working class coalition

Good luck keeping the coalition together

This is absolutely correct and extremely important about governing. Excellent thread.

It is unfortunately not clear at all that it's true about winning elections, *especially* as the out-party. Perhaps! But 2016 and 2024 - and 2010, for that matter - are not encouraging.
The forces that make Trump impervious to internal correction within the GOP are going to create huge obstacles to the party winning elections and governing for a generation.
The tragedy of today's GOP is that they have purged anyone inclined to independence and leadership. Those who are left chose to climb into the back seat, and now they're lost. But they're finally yelling at the driver.

Yep. Many of us who weren't sufficiently Trump-curious had to find other places to work.

The libertarian movement had one job, and it failed, and now it wants credit for success.
Yes, some libertarians *did* try to warn you about Trump. But you canceled them for it.

The dull teeth-gnashing about Bad Bunny should be considered in the context of how the right responded to the rise of AOC. She was criticized for having lived in the suburbs and being called Sandy by her friends. How dare she “act White”! How dare he not!

Ten years ago today, #SCOTUS issued five unsigned and unexplained 5-4 rulings granting emergency applications to block President Obama’s Clean Power Plan—a completely unprecedented move that helped to usher in the Court’s modern … (mis)adventures … with its shadow docket.

209. The Modern Emergency Docket Turns Ten
The February 2016 rulings blocking the Clean Power Plan were unprecedented; in retrospect, they were harbingers of a paradigm shift in the Supreme Court's role.

To reject the US as a fundamentally American country with a deep shared history and commonality with the rest of the Americas, including that Spanish has long been our de facto national second language, is on a deep level anti-American. It's hating actual American culture and history and tradition.
