Nostalgia political economy
15 percent of American homes lacked indoor plumbing in 1960.

The idea that everyone in 1955 America lived in a split-level suburban home with two cars and three kids and one income is, quite simply, a fantasy borne of media consumption.

We make no apologies for blocking Labor’s disastrous bill to kill FOI. The task for this Parliament is to make government more transparent and more accountable. Right now the Albanese government is the greatest obstacle to that.

"Far from a peak, China's gasoline demand is estimated to have fallen 9% in October on the year to 12.5 million tons, with average daily use roughly flat with September..."

China's oil demand is entering structural decline.
EVs put an end to China's usual holiday surge in gasoline use
Tianyu Jiang took a 2,000-km (1,200-mile) road trip this month during China's national holiday week, driving in his electric vehicle from the southwestern Sichuan basin to Beijing for the first time.

As usual from this author, lots of cherrypicking here. Most obviously, Australia's performance on inflation is very similar to that of other developed contries. Employment growth is featured prominently but the fact that unemployment has risen steadily sinc3 2022 is ignored.

When riding waves of popularity in Opposition, Starmer had the opportunity to flag a potential need for additional tax. He had another chance immediately after winning "oh no there's an unexpected black hole!". Instead he put his head in the sand, hoping problem would go away.
I thought Starmer was going to fund public services by increasing productivity and growth? As I (and others) said, that’s supply sider cope and delusion.
“Nobody thought a Labour government would have to raise taxes by more than £70bn,” claims one insider in this excellent piece. Shows the problem of the climate of fear in meetings created by some of Starmer’s aides, in that plenty of Labour insiders, did, in fact, think this!
