How to make a kidnapping sound heroic
January 4, 2026 at 9:01 AM
I’ve only got Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian left on my calling for a royal commission bingo card. Feeling pretty confident.

Are you talking about the same Sam Newman who had Thomas Sewell and Blair Cottrell on his podcast 11 months ago?

The News Corp campaign for a royal commission is like pushing on a string - the other media just following their lead and Labor too cowed to push back. No rationale, no questions, no interrogation of the problems. The whole thing is genuinely stupid.

Grant Hackett calling for a royal commission?! Because values?!
Accused of domestic violence, smashed his house up, lost in the casino out of control drunk, groped a fellow passenger’s nipple on a plane, too dangerous for his own family …that Grant Hackett?

🟡 NEW: The New York Times and Washington Post learned of a secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin Friday night — but held off publishing what they knew to avoid endangering US troops.

Imagine the United States imposing a functional government on some other country. Which model would they be working from?

1: Bomb and kidnap
2: ..?
3. Profit!

It seems like the extent of strategic planning was the demented one saying “just go and get him and everything will work out”.
No troops on the ground, a non-compliant regime, an angry populace, a live hostage situation, a divided nation, a corrupt US leadership in fantasyland. It’s a nightmare.
January 3, 2026 at 9:08 PM
They should totally do this.
Crowds will line the streets holding flowers for them, and signs saying “welcome liberators” and “thank you for your kidnappings” and “please take our oil for yourselves and keep the profits”.
And there ya have it…

Officials from top Wall Street firms will be traveling to Venezuela to investigate “investment prospects” of the country. “The trip will feature about 20 officials from the finance, energy and defense sectors.”

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

Lest anyone for a single moment thinks this latest coup is a somehow a dramatic breach of long-term US foreign policy.

A negotiated exit!
Completely unprovoked, Trump has directed US forces to bomb a foreign nation and kidnap its leader, without any legal justification.
The euphemisms are going to be off the charts.
January 3, 2026 at 10:14 AM
Kidnapped, you ghouls.
January 3, 2026 at 9:47 AM
They’ve just … kidnapped the leader of a foreign nation (and his wife).
What the fuck do they think is going to happen next?
January 3, 2026 at 9:42 AM
You would think one fucking Very Serious Commentator would’ve realised this by now, but seems no
It would be practically and legally impossible to hold a royal commission that goes anywhere near the actions or motivations of the accused killer, before his criminal proceedings are concluded, which could take years. That limitation would render the royal commission itself pointlessly premature.

The Bondi tragedy reaction really has exposed the supine idiocy of almost all of our mainstream political commentators hasn’t it
January 2, 2026 at 4:40 AM
Is a royal commission supposed to investigate and judge the killer’s motives before or after his trial?

The pusillanimous ABC.
"Simply unprecedented".
No.
A fucking inhuman, genocidal disgrace which Israel is making a habit of committing.
Having killed hundreds of aid workers, Israel is now completely banning 37 aid orgs from entering Gaza, including Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Oxfam, Caritas, and World Vision. This is an obvious war crime and thousands will die.
Any comment from our government?
'Simply unprecedented': Israel banning dozens of charities from Gaza
The Israeli government says the organisations have not met new requirements, which include recognising Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and banning any so-called "de-legitimisation" of Israel.

When 15 people are massacred by terrorists in Bondi, Netanyahu blames Albanese - and the media follows his cue.
But Netanyahu commits mass murder and enforced starvation every day, and it’s silence from Albanese and our media (oh, except for a ceremonial invitation to Israel’s pres).
Pretty stark.
