Today, I spoke with Kilmar Abrego Garcia and his wife, Jennifer. In April, when I met with him in El Salvador, Trump said he would never set foot in the U.S. again.

This case has never been about one man alone; if the govt can violate the constitutional rights of one, all our rights are threatened.

i am fascinated by how nate silver turns everything he doesn’t like into a bespoke ideology. it’s not that he is annoyed by HCR, it is that she is a dreaded “ism” responsible for everything he doesn’t like about the democratic party. same with bluesky.

"for the time being, what we’re seeing is heartening indeed"

Indeed-but I think it's important to zoom out to keep sight of all this as the latest stress testing by a Fascist project that goes back at least to Trump I and could be seen as decades long.
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Fiasco for Trump as Judge Issues Harsh Rebuke in Abrego Garcia Case
Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

as for "what we're going to do," maybe look up FDR instead of the last Democratic message consultant message. Turns out there's short term relief and long term strategy and acknowledging "yeah, shit is fucked, rich get richer, you barely get by" and you can/should do ALL of it.

This is the current tactical front. These lawyers are patriots and heroes.
DOJ has sued Maine, Oregon, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Washington, Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Vermont for access to its most sensitive voter data.

My firm has moved to intervene in 10 of those cases. We are working on the last 4.

Once again, one very easy way for the 🇺🇸 political media to escape the constant criticism which it has found itself subject to these last years would be for it to stop acting in ways that <completely justify> all of the constant criticism which it has found itself subject to these last years
AP on Trump now, and Biden in June 2022.

For Trump, declining to 36 percent approval is “good news.”

For Biden, holding steady at 41% is “a source of concern.”

While I view attempts to consolidate various flavors of Fascism globally as a sort of nodal network, I'm also becoming convinced the Technofeudalist Fascists are the node w/ momentum.

Historically corporate interests have tried to ride the tiger, but these fuckers seem to actually *be* the tiger.

This. This was the formative event of my generation & our entire politics in 🇺🇸. The structural break after which we were no longer a full democracy, when 5 Wizards In Robes decided they were a super-legislature & counting all the actual votes didn’t matter. The rest has been 25 years of commentary.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

all of these people were picked, in part, *because* they had no real prospect of advancing past where they're at. trump's the only person who would promote them, and everyone — both trump, and the people he promoted — all know it. it's why they're all loyal to him. that was the point.
like, rubio was never going beyond his senate station in any administration other than this one, noem was never going to the senate, hegseth has never been a politician, zeldin was a washout, loeffler's a loser, bondi was never leaving florida, gabbard was basically unemployable

I see this so often that I think it might qualify as a law:

The time people take to notice demographic trends is equal to the time required for the results to materialise.

In other words, however obvious the maths might be, we cannot or will not see it coming.
Trump thinks immigrants will destroy Europe. The truth is the opposite.
This column is about the long arc of population change, the hybridity of European cultures, and the widely-misinterpreted results of demographic momentum.
Big issues we need to understand.

These are the facts: plummeting birth rates mean that without attracting immigration, many countries are sliding towards collapse, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The only actual solution is repealing & reversing the total assault on 🇺🇸 federal funding of higher ed & research. No one else is coming to save the day. Not 🇪🇺. Not 🇨🇦. Not private donors. Etc. The sooner we admit that, the better, & that starts with university presidents loudly speaking up together.
