The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

I saw the new The Running Man tonight and it was so fun. It was also frankly terrifying.

I haven’t finished the book yet so I can’t speak to how faithful the movie is to it, but it was a very enjoyable way to spend the evening.

Reminder that this is a man who worked on 128 episodes of a very popular TV series, and he's got to sell off all of his shit just to afford cancer treatment.

SO, HOW IS THE AVERAGE PERSON SUPPOSED TO?

I needed to be anywhere else tonight because things are garbage, so I saw the new Frankenstein. While I didn’t love all of the choices, the film is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth seeing at the theater if you can.

(And it made me want to read Eynhallow again.)

B&N has dropped their Best Books of 2025 list with 2.5 months left in the year so here's your reminder that "best" is arbitrary, time is a construct, and there are still a ton of good books coming out that shouldn't be ignored just because the credits are rolling early

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

I watched The Long Walk tonight & it was harder than I expected. The movie is devastating but so so good, and I sobbed for the last 45 minutes of it. I think I really needed that cry. I recommend the movie but just know what you’re getting into when you go to see it. It’s a really great adaptation.

Happy Labor Day. Just a li’l reminder: so many people died horrible deaths so we could have things as seemingly inevitable as the weekend or overtime. The owners would claw it all back in an instant.

NEWS: Walgreens just got taken over by private equity.

Private equity has a record of running companies into the ground.

Walgreens could be the latest victim: closing more stores, service plummeting, workers losing their jobs, and eventually bankruptcy.

Why do people gatekeep? And let’s face it, it’s usually men. I saw the Toxic Avenger tonight (super enjoyable, so much fun!) and a man came in, immediately asked a couple a few rows ahead “please tell me you’ve seen the original movies.” Like, making sure they were qualified to be there. So gross.

Just tried to book a Covid booster appointment at Walgreens along with a flu shot, and they’re now requiring a prescription for the Covid shot. Now I have to see my doctor first to convince them my anxiety is enough of a mental health disorder to get a prescription? This is such garbage.

I saw the movie Together tonight and it was so wild and creepy and unnerving. But I loved the references to Aristophanes’ origins of love, which I must have learned about in college but really it was in Hedwig where I first cared about it. This week was hard but this movie helped in a weird way.
