“Gaza now hosts the largest group of child amputees in modern history.”

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini says nearly 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have suffered life-changing wounds in Israel’s war – and almost one-quarter of those are children.

Yesterday, my great-grandpa passed away. He was 93 years old. Three years ago, I wrote an article about how his home garden in Auburn Gresham has fed my family over the years. With this piece, I hoped to cement my family's history in Chicago so that he and my great-granny live on forever. 💕

May the next chapter of our nation's history be all about repair and transformation

speedily and in our days
In deeply "red" Lubbock TX, my PC(USA) church (my wife is head pastor) we are currently reading your book. Some of the most unlikely people immediately noticed (with respect to US history) "Gee, we haven't really REPAIRED much have we?"
Thankful for your fine work to add that BACK to the water!"

It's not a foolproof plan but every political debate from now on should be a Normal Guy competition. Ask them to describe grocery shopping in detail. Talk about what it's like to have a friend

I have somehow never read Breakfast of Champions and holy hell in three pages Vonnegut sums it all up - colonialism, racism, income inequality, and a guy who owns a car dealership who reads a scifi novel and takes away the wrong idea

Just on a personal note, reporting this story broke my heart. Of all the unfathomable things Trump has done this year, putting SNAP recipients through this psychological hell tops the list. My endless gratitude to everyone who spoke to me. To all who who are suffering: I'm so sorry.

It's not in this article but the government asserts that the sandwich was thrown at "point blank range", which implies subway sandwiches have defined effective weapon ranges of varying lethality, and I would like to see the government's chart of these ranges.

When I got out of college, I rented a room in my buddy’s double-wide. He was a firefighter. I was a firefighter. I made $26,000 that year and had 0 kids. He had 3 kids, 2 jobs, rented out a room - and still needed food stamps to make ends meet and put good food on the table for the kids.
As SNAP hangs in the balance for nearly 42 million people, misinformation is rampant. Myths of laziness and fraud persist when we should be talking about too low wages for workers, income inequality, and our threadbare social safety net.

In this guest post, Adam Chandler sorts fact from fiction:
SNAP benefits feed essential needs while still leaving many hungry for more
Journalist and author Adam Chandler explains what so much of the conversation about them gets wrong.

The students of Saint Joseph Catholic school in Hanover apologized, saying they didn‘t realize the significance of the float and that it won’t be used again in part because they now understand it is inappropriate and in part because it is running third for the Democratic Senate nomination in Maine
Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.

Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

I wish I could tell you
everything will be OK,
that the world isn’t on fire,
that love can fix
all the broken things—
but only one
of those things is true,
only love
(fierce and soft
& full of fury)
can salve,
can salvage,
can mourn,
can bear witness—
here, we hold each other,
how we get through.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Our problem isn't a lack of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding inequality.
