New — I wrote about the myriad ways journalism’s moral rot manifests, and how our crumbling institutions have created the conditions for it to fester:
Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Esptein's journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.

Was walking down the street tonight and saw someone had thrown out a lightly used coffee table that was the exact one I was going to buy. Maybe 45 minutes of work to fix a couple minor issues, and it’s a like-new $250 table. It is now in my garage.

I’ve complained about refs—hated them, really—for 25+ years, and I’m not gonna stop now.

(OKC did not win because of the refs.)

From @wired.com: an interview with #WatchDuty app founder. Many of us have depended on them through the LA Fires:

"We're doing like 30,000 requests a second at peak right now. We're doing more users in an hour than we've done in like a month. It's absolutely bonkers."

‘All Hands on Deck’: How Watch Duty Keeps Up With the California Wildfires
While the destructive Los Angeles fires rage, all eyes have turned to the app that lets you track them. WIRED spoke with Watch Duty founder John Mills about how the platform has met the moment.

Five things most people don't know about editors and editing:

(1) The job of "editor" is really something like thirty different jobs rolled into one—not just revising, copy editing, and proofreading but developing ideas, mentoring talent, promoting pieces, etc. And nobody is good at all the jobs.
Becca Rothfeld on editing as an underappreciated art. I have a great many thoughts on this... but I'm too busy editing at the moment to share them!

Beating Oklahoma in our first game in more than a decade to preserve just the *possibility* that they'd miss a bowl for the first time in almost 30 years felt good.

To be in Texas A&M's shoes would be phenomenal (a sentence I will never write or think again).
The idea of Texas A&M knocking Texas out of the playoff in a rivalry game they haven’t played in over a decade gives me a secondhand hater’s high so intense I probably shouldn’t drive right now

100%.

I didn't even mind that paying for twitter meant paying its owner. I objected because you were paying for features that shouldn't exist in the first place and that actively made the platform worse.
Here’s the thing: I’m 100% happy to pay for a social media app. Every month. Roll out Bsky Blue tomorrow and I’m in.

The problem with Twitter premium wasn’t the premium. The problem was that you would be giving money to manic, drug addled Bond villain.
the big questions now, from @davekarpf.bsky.social: “eventually they need to figure out: All right, how do we pay for the service? How do we pay our employees? How do we sustain this growth?”

The Bernie-Biden task force resulted in the Build Back Better agenda. In a normal democracy, it would've passed. It included:

- $15 minimum wage
- Free community college
- Universal pre-k
- Cap to out of pocket child care costs
- Subsizied elder care
- Taxes on the wealthy

It failed in the Senate.
Another (not totally mutually exclusive) way to think about the last four years: Democrats tried to enact an FDR sized agenda to deal with the threat of fascism and materially improve the lives of the working class, but our political system makes it impossible to pass a working class agenda.
one way to think about the dems in the last 8 years is that they wanted all the electoral benefits of being a popular front against authoritarianism but none of the substantive commitments
