there's definitely an essay in this, about how this entire generation of right wingers have spent their entire career smashing the drywall and kicking the legs out from under polite society, seemingly so sheltered that they honestly never considered that it might end up affecting them too

I truly think this is an underappreciated point that much of the "rising far right" polisci literature has missed.
We have n->inf findings that bad stuff leads to far right voting. But why _doesn't_ bad stuff lead to far left (or center left) voting? One big answer: A failure of political supply.

Yes. This is one reason why trolls will always try to change the subject (frame) when arguing, and also relentlessly pull you back to arguing the minutiae of their arguments whenever you try the same.
