I think we need to stop worrying about the centerline and just have a policy platform. Dems have a trust problem; their insistence on triangulating and trying to be all things to all people makes everyone distrust them. Being 3 polls and an op ed away from flipping on a given issue isnt a winner.

Turns out that prioritizing appealing to "moderate" republicans and arming a genocide that your most energetic supporters are against is a dumb thing to do. The whole "you owe dems your vote regardless of what they do" is exactly how we've gotten such a venal, sclerotic, and out of touch party.

Nothing about how they've conducted themselves in the minority (or really in the last decade or so) suggests that they can effectively wield power anyway. We could give them a trifecta tomorrow and they'd piss it away trying to "compromise".

And so we got W's baffling semi-rehabilitation among liberals and J6 being treated by the nation at large as basically a riot that got out of hand and not the existential threat to Democracy that it was. Treating them as unserious makes it much easier to treat their crimes that way as well.

I'd argue that we've already done that for W and Trump I. In both cases, even as we were aware of the awful things they were responsible for, we spent years laughing at their buffoonery in such a way that, at least in retrospect, took the gravitas out of what they'd done.
