We absolutely do not need to know the origin story of Poirot’s mustache complete with flashback. Get back to over the top period detectiving.
WORD I am really, really tired of "we tease the tragic backstory of the detective" can't a detective just detect, the murder is surely sufficient drama.
my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

Elon's little serfs are quite literally begging journalists to come back because every publicly available source of data shows people have fled the platform and young people won't use it.

They are literally begging regular people to come back. Don't do it! It is a website by and for actual Nazis!

This paper contains some good arguments about an issue that concerns me a lot when I hear my colleagues talking about LLM use in developing their research:

Whose ideas are you presenting as your own?

(Though the fatalist argument the authors make at the end of paper is disappointing/bizarre.)

The danger with crypto/NFTs was not that they'd do any of what was promised but that the rich would force the technology into everything and force people to use it to interact with existing services. That failed and genAI is being pushed by the same trash but with the experience of the NFT bubble
increasingly starting to think that the endgame is to kill consumer computing so end users are driven to use centrally-operated cloud computing farms that these companies have total control over, so AI becomes inescapable

right now AI is irritating but possible to avoid, and we can't have that

Why would we want to OWN any copies of scrolls, honey, the Library of Alexandria has plenty!
Why do (us) old people want to burden Gen Z with our nostalgia for an antique piece of hardware in the first place?
A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

When we say "research shows that you shouldn't do it" these people revolt, because "do the thing" was their sole success criterion. They were doing it not to improve retention or increase productivity or any of those things, so alternative ideas that work won't be accepted. It HAS to be That Thing.

Per my last re-post, twice this year I've been commissioned to write reviews of harms that can arise from the use of LLMs and then, as we surface the harms, told
it's not appropriate to be political.
But LLMs are a deeply extractive technology, they are political by design.

Deeply disappointed to hear that the BBC has pushed out one of the most brilliant presenters in all of science communication for speaking with integrity and honor in support of human rights and dignity.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

The answer to this is, obviously, start eating children.
So chicken farms have started spending millions of dollars putting in state of the art air filtration and circulation systems - because culling whole flocks to mitigate avian flu is expensive - but we have done zero to improve air quality in schools - because kids are expendable I guess.
