In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

they don’t want you to know how they treat prisoners because it will grieve you to know it, which is natural and human, and because of your normal human reaction you will want the system changed. It’s important to them that your natural aversion to how the system works not be engaged.

...on a lyric-nerd level, this song is written without any end-rhyme until the very end: Build tension for 23 bars, and then release it on the 24th with that last rhyme. A fun creative writing challenge, but also mirrors movement work: it is possible to lose and lose and lose and then win.

Despite the times we live in, we must eat & take care of ourselves & each other. In our capitalist society, that means we must work. But having to work & do chores doesn't mean we must put our heads in the sand & act like everything's okay. Instead, we can build a praxis of resistance into our days.
