One of my favorite memories ever from live shows/streaming was when Leslie had the idea that Tomie would come on the stream and I'd be the straight man to everyone else fawning over her. Linking his family's gofundme below youtu.be/t6Ylmjnip0o?...

I'm so sorry to hear of Leslie's passing. he was always kind to me and earnestly helpful with my tiny little projects. RIP Leslie 🕊️

Oh my God. I don't even know what to say. Leslie was an incredibly, unbelievably generous and supportive and insightful and funny man who believed in my voice and encouraged me in a way that meant and still means a tremendous amount to me. Please donate and support his family.

Consider the example in that Metroid article that's making the rounds. Having a voice tell you "hey, I think you might've missed something" when you bypass a save room doesn't teach the player to look out for save rooms. It teaches them to listen for instructions.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond delivers the series' trademark gameplay in spades, but I fear one very annoying addition might derail the whole thing
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has plenty of the good stuff. It also has an incredibly annoying, incredibly un-Metroid sidekick who won't shut up.

I have said this before but just doing my best to be sincere/friendly online has done more for my career than any amount of work or talent or irl networking tbh. I got both my full-time jobs and most of my Kickstarter work thanks to people I met on twitter and I didn't really have a "brand" account
networking is an incredibly important part of maintaining a professional presence in your creative industry, but it can be daunting. have you tried being completely fucking ridiculous online

I try to stay out of the argument since I mostly work in video and not games but there's a reason players react negatively to super obnoxious/overt tutorializing and it isn't because they dont know what's good for them or etc? It's more difficult but so much more satisfying when it's done well
I'll be honest: dunno that I'm willing to buy a "we HAVE to force tutorialization down players' throats" argument in a period where games like counterstrike, dota, minecraft, roblox et al are some of the most popular games in the world

I also want to note as an addendum that "pushing tutorializaton on players" and "having no resources at all" are not the same thing. I'm dating myself here but a LOT of 90s adventure games had an NPC you could _ask_ for hints but who would not typically volunteer them and many are beloved characters

maybe I just have to settle for acknowledging that this is why I'm not the target audience for a lot of mainstream games. I want games that reward me for being thoughtful about them and expect it of me, not ones that are terrified I'm looking over at youtube on the side

I just want to say there are a lot of journalists and writers who do real, incredible work on topics that matter while maintaining high standards. Many of them do not have stable employment or recognition from major institutions.

Your biggest rival/obstacle should be your former self. Doc Hammer had a great bit where he was like, "When I say I suck, what I mean is what's inside of me is better than my previous work, I have to apologize for it with my next piece" (paraphrasing)
I think most artists hit a point where they’re like, well if I can’t be the best artist, I shall be the most ME artist.

Maybe In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch and the Venture Bros art book
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

Look, I'm sure the money was a key reason why so many people were willing to associate with Epstein. But we're not really short of wealthy donors in this country. Clearly, a lot of Epstein's connections genuinely liked him, didn't think he did anything all that bad, and even sympathized with him.

sure growing up with half my family dying and a close relative who is a mortician was "weird" and "traumatic" but at least death was so normalized for us nobody in my family would even consider shit like this. as a kid I found the death taboo pretty isolating/irritating tbh
at some point we ought to interrogate the link between the techbro-freak demographic and cowardice in confronting death anxiety. not usually one to go "society has gotten too soft and that's why everyone is weird now" but in this case it feels salient. I think we unlearned how to accept death
New insult to life itself just dropped
