rare thing to read an obituary with a smile on your face, doubly rare for the smile to be because the person was so fuckin cool and not because [signal drops]

By Statcast numbers, the spread between best and worst teams in the three main catching metrics:

Blocking: 12 runs
Throwing: 19 runs
Framing: 45 runs

I actually think that undersells framing even a little, but it shows why it's valued so much more heavily.

My friend works on a Great Lakes freighter and was born just hours after the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. He wrote something about it on his site (where he often writes about life on the big freshwater lakers).

Tonight in 1983, more than 100 million Americans saw multiple thermonuclear weapons destroy Kansas City, Missouri, in “The Day After” on ABC. A.C. Nielsen Company reported that 62 percent of television sets that night were tuned to the film. I watched in my packed college dorm lounge. How about you?

Here is the Newsweek magazine article that led to the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," marked up to show key passages that Lightfoot borrowed. Short thread at quoted post. Thanks to @bikeguy.bsky.social for reminding me about this. #EdmundFitzgerald50

On this eve of fifty Novembers
the winds still howl
the bell still tolls.

My breath turns heavy
as we drift into the long cold night.
The Fitzgerald stirs beneath.

I harbor their echoes
and cradle her steel.

My waves bear the sorrow
of all I have taken.

I’m so excited to finally share this: I’m writing a book! It’s about Oakland—its rise as a great American sports town, its fall to the billionaires who abandoned it, and, most of all, the fans and activists and founders who fought to hold onto this aspect of the city’s identity and soul.

The aging, latent police reporter in me can't help put pause to remark on the unforced error of the SAC in Salt Lake's FBI field office making the unforced error of announcing they have recovered a “footwear impression.” A shout-out to toss or destroy those shoes, ASAP.

That's a detail you keep.

If there were ever proof that MLB treats Jackie Robinson as nothing more than a marketing tool, its that they have ignored the legacy of Larry Doby who did the same as Jackie but for the AL. Both men deserve better, but especially Doby.
Guardians have been denied numerous times from wearing Larry Doby's number

The Angels have only had 12 players in their history:

Jim Fregosi
Nolan Ryan
Frank Tanana
Tim Salmon
Troy Percival
Tawny Kitaen's husband
Mark Langston
Garret Anderson
Darrin Erstad
Mike Trout
Albert Pujols
Shohei Ohtani

Their only two managers are Mike Scioscia and Danny Glover.
Seriously. Who thinks of Reggie Jackson on the Angels?
This is one of the funniest images humanity has ever crafted.
