There is additionally an intrinsic problem in playing ball with censorship regimes like China: once they have leverage over you, it's hard to keep the balance of "it's better that they have this than nothing". The regime asks for more, and now you have revenue on the line, and redlines dissolve. 3/

What Putnam misses is that we're struggling to form community because we've been forced to DIY society. Without unions or a decent safety net, most Americans are caught in precarity and have to put so much energy into paid work and unpaid care for family that they have nothing left for community.

Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.
