Re the hacking sequences I think Pantheon treats this well, with artistic license . Or the matrix.

I’m excited about Neuromancer coming out at this particular moment in time. www.reddit.com/r/SciFiNews/...

I did not feel this way until pretty recently, but my expectation of the near future matches this one most closely. (vs something more like Culture series or Star Trek previously)

Even with decades of advanced notice, unlike the current situation. Job retraining isn’t going to fly. This is all assuming there are jobs to be had *at all* (which is not my expectation but it’s certainly somewhat debatable still).
we verifiably do not do a good job of mitigating the societal impacts of technology on labor. this leaves us with things like the entire state of west virginia yearning for the return of the coal economy, whatever's going on with detroit, etc

While we’re on this topic most of “the left is too focused on trans issues” comes from a 2019 Kamala Harris interview where someone asks her about transgender care in prisons and she stated that was the law already. Vast majority of public didn’t even know the status quo then and now it defines Dems
I forgot the "Obama can't name a Sox player" controversy. A reporter asked about his favorite player "growing up" and Obama didn't have one - he didn't move to Chicago until he was 24.

Definitely a whiff (staff should at least brief POTUS for such a Q) but a weird thing to hold onto 15 years later
I like that he threw the Obama line in there just to make sure we can all see what it’s about.

This is a really great point I don’t think I’d seen. The unrealized gains issue already exists for vast majority of startup employees. It is only the founders and very early employees who who are currently free of it.
I'm extra exasperated about the "uNrEaLiZed gAiNs" stuff because I come from the milieu of bay area startup software engineers, where a central plank of everyone's tax planning is not to get turbofucked by the AMT on ISO exercises.

A tax not just on unrealized, but often unrealizable gains.
Property taxes are like libraries in that people would scream they are an impossible leftist fantasy if they hadn't already existed forever.

You’re thinking of the mad man theory of deterrence, but we’re actually just doing the mad *men* theory, ie misogyny and racism. Common mistake.
No you see this is actually brilliant because our enemies cannot possibly know our next move if neither do we

Quick reminder that when Elon Musk was in government, he lied about massive fraud, and did so to eliminate safety net programs as well as government capacity to oversee real fraud.

I used to think this, but it is not accounting for the risk of ruin to society from systems capture and corruption. I obviously learned this in a hindsight 2020 way, but nonetheless any good that came so far feels offset by that risk having manifested. The class is malignant and should be maligned.

These are all physical (hardware) examples. People can take those brand new new nvidia open source models and run their AI girlfriend locally. They can even create it locally if they can’t find a template.

I’m not saying any of this is good, but we need to think bigger than mere regulation in AI.
And for the people who are arguing that ubiquity = unavoidable, please recall that the world has collectively phased out CFCs in spray cans, lead in petrol, asbestos in building materials, thalidomide in [something]… these deaths are a CHOICE we are making, and we can make a different choice.
Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.

Elon is still going on about this. Rep Omar represent Minneapolis, still known as one of the whitest places in America at 59% white. Moreover Omar won this seat by *32pp*. It is one of the largest margins anywhere. You can’t steal a seat that blue.

There is a trivially easy solution to the exodus issue, which is to pass wealth taxes everywhere.

That probably explains why Ackerman, a NY resident, is taking an interest in CA politics.

Mark Cuban spent Christmas debating healthcare reform on Bluesky. He's not just any billionaire - he founded Cost Plus Drugs, which sells medications at low margins. So when he pushed back on M4A advocates, it sparked real policy debate, not the usual dunking.
For all Universal HC/Single Payer/M4A advocates.

What do the biggest, expensive hospital chains do. Do they opt out and only serve the rich ?

Who in the USA gov runs the program?

R U ok with having to see a primary care doc before you can see a specialist ?

some good climate/energy news:

* 96% of new US power capacity was carbon-free in 2024 (56 gigawatts!)

* 2025 included the first month ever when 51% of power on the U.S. grid was carbon-free

* The golbal trend is overwhelming: The world is now investing more $ in clean energy than fossil fuels

Cross-posting this one from METR. If you've seen this graph before, you're probably going to be pretty interested in the new update.

If you've never seen this graph before, please just ignore this post. Just a guy and his charts, nothing to see here.
