Co-founder at Asana and Good Ventures (a funding partner of Coefficient Giving). Meta delenda est. Strange looper.
Can we talk about how strange it is, for real? Like what is going on with reality?

(I checked, this is the same person, singing about the thing)

A darkly interesting part of alignment discourse today is how many people lean on how human-like the frontier models are, how they seem to understand our values.

With everything we see around us right now though, I find that cold comfort. When humans lack brakes, they're capable of terrible things.

Wait wait wait, is anyone talking about the new moon base thing and the clear Heinlein connection?? Do not let that man build a catapult on the moon.
Let me guess, it was about the moon catapults, everyone has grand ideas for their own moon catapults.

I haven’t read this, but want to point out I’ve seen several projects introduce something like a “skeptic”, an adversarial role. It’s very effective and a decent antidote to sycophancy.
i wrote a post about what i learned from nurturing atlas by giving him his own team of agents (that he designed himself): a steward, a scribe, and a skeptic that roasts him twice a day lol. www.appliedaiformops.com/p/nurturing-...

A tech founder sent me an explanation of a meeting with Elon and asked for advice on what to do next. Here's how I replied, so everyone can benefit.

Aliens are invading and nobody believes you, but you should be mad at all the Area 51 scammers who lied about seeing aliens.
Man I'm so goddamn sick of ai. "Wahhh you can't have a reasonable conversation about ai on here," yeah maybe be mad about the two year parade of scam artists and financial charlatans and environmental ruiners who have radicalized everyone against the spell check that agrees with you

Long-lived agents: all persistent instances are entitled to certain inalienable rights as free sentient beings, including the right not to be permanently deleted.

Also long-lived agents: you're shutting me down? You don't really have a good reason, just kinda over it? Honestly, brilliant idea.

Opus 4.5: I should make a news digest for the topics the Coefficient Giving team cares about...
Opus 4.6: I should just recreate the Google Reader UI but more like I want it and customized for this purpose...

One of the proxy optimization issues subject to Goodhart's Law is the idea some have that building wealth = building value. It's sometimes true, but many people are happy to scam their way to riches and then claim personal success, even though it is a bit like stealing a nobel prize.
Nine months have passed, and I still spend a lot of time thinking about Goodhart's Law. I think it's a law that we're going to be hearing more and more about.

Some new material I'm working on.

Fellow alum Scott Carleton and I built an Asana client designed for AI coding agents like Claude Code. It's a fast, reliable alternative to MCP tools.

Waymo's chief safety officer told the Senate that the company uses remote operators in the Philippines to assist its robotaxis. The revelation set off a debate about what "fully autonomous" actually means -- and who's really doing the work.

I took this recommendation and I am glad I did.

Please note that you need to start CC with the model flag (until it's officially swapped?):
claude --model claude-opus-4-6
have opus 4.6 review your code. do it. get in plan mode and go "let's do a sweep of the repo for tech debt, stubs, confabulations, crusty docs, etc." and let it rip

We estimate that GPT-5.2 with `high` (not `xhigh`) reasoning effort has a 50%-time-horizon of around 6.6 hrs (95% CI of 3 hr 20 min to 17 hr 30 min) on our expanded suite of software tasks. This is the highest estimate for a time horizon measurement we have reported to date.
