If you have a GOP rep and you’ve been holding off on contacting them because what difference will it make, you could be the reason the funniest thing happens
PUNCHBOWL: “.. GOP members messaged us over the weekend saying that they, too, are considering retiring in the middle of the term. Here’s one particularly exercised senior House Republican:

The humble Ghiradelli box mix brownie handily wastes so many more highfalutin desserts. An unreal product.

Nice try, Gmail. I resented your pre-sorted tabs when they rolled out, and I think I'm smarter than spell check. Disabling these features to avoid training your AI is nothing to me.

Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

The political pundits that have been trying to get you to sell out other human beings as a power move to win elections are both intellectually and morally bankrupt.
Decision Desk has called the New Jersey governors race for Mikie Sherill. Yet another state where millions of dollars in anti trans ads didn't work.

Baked an apple cake last night. Man, I get a true thrill out of putting each baking ingredient away as you use them in the recipe, so the kitchen gets less messy as you go. Feels like a magic trick.

tbh I don't think this is that niche but man we gotta make LIVING accessible for people who don't have smart phones and/or data. I'm talking bus schedules, restaurant menus, doing your laundry, accessing social security and unemployment, all of it. we goddamn GOTTA dude
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Hard to find a more obvious example of the journalism adage “If someone says it’s raining outside and someone else says it isn’t, your job is not to quote them both, your job is to go outside.”
A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

A must read thread!
1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

Please help Racket, the wonderful independent journalists for whom I occasionally get off the couch and write something, fill the cartoon thermometer at this link by giving them a little bit of money in exchange for regular doses of excellent, MN-centric alt weekly style online writing.

We are living in an era where we all—as citizens, employees, creators, fans, whatever—understand, value, and care far more about the larger things we are involved with than the people in charge of them, who as often as not distrust or even disdain our commitment.

Nate Silver thinks academic journals are a lost cause.

But they aren't. If anything, the real problem is that these journals are *too* profitable.

Which means no one bothers to dream up other ideas, only variations on the theme.

We can’t let weird stuff like the actual, rock bottom crime rates affect our number one industry, which is the imaginary crime industrial
complex
1. This week, the FBI released its comprehensive crime report for 2024, which revealed that both VIOLENT CRIME and PROPERTY CRIME reached their LOWEST LEVELS SINCE THE 1960s

This a massive story. But you might not have heard about it, even if you follow the news closely.

Here's why.
Why you might not know that 2024 was America's safest year since the 1960s
An overwhelming majority of Americans, 64 percent, believe that crime increased across the country in 2024, according to a Gallup survey conducted late last year.

How can we revere Shakespeare as the greatest poet in the English language when he didn't write "I got new girls and I'm running around / the house doesn't look the same / I hung new posters on my wall / and the dog don't remember your name"?

the collective lack of imagination around public safety is so depressing to me. the cops did nothing to protect her from this mugging which is proof that we must promote cops who kill people?
I know politics rots our brains and being a crime victim is traumatic, but imagine putting your victimhood ahead of Amir Locke’s family whose son was killed and decrying politics while using your letter for pure politics. Shameful stuff.
