Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I do like that 95% of Lupin III episodes are sick heists played mostly straight, and then the other 5% are like, Lupin is assaulted by a time traveller from 3000 years in the future who wants revenge on his descendent, or he gets bit by a vampire, possessed by the spirit of a pharaoh, etc.

Making bookmark party favours for our engagement party. Did a couple testers. Right one is acrylics with my sputtering dying airbrush compressor. Left is using watercolours. Still have a few to try. The back (once dry) will have book recommendations from my partner and I.

Just a reminder that generative AI is theft of labor and intellectual property, uses vast amounts of energy/ water, provides at best mediocre results (if not outright lies or misinformation), actually affects your ability to think over time (mind duh), and is in general a really fucking bad idea.

like this AI shit as an example. the technology should not exist. it is making everyone's lives worse, has zero use cases other than cheating in school, and is further burning down a world where every day already has a new apocalyptic climate change headline. no op-ed can address the scale of it

This is the big challenge as an ELL teacher right now. My students are using AI to pass (and graduate) and my goal is to teach them learning for the sake of language acquisition, not just to get a checkmark on their transcript.
this is the whole ballgame imo. the fact that students can feel like their entire future depends on doing well on a paper doesn’t incentivize learning; it incentivizes doing well on the paper. goes double when those futures depend on having a degree
