Our Executive Director @librarylandia.bsky.social spoke with CBC about the Alberta government's censorship of comic books in schools.

Their attack on diverse voices is a continuation of how governments have historically exploited "moral panics" to threaten human rights. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Alberta has banned graphic books before. In the 1950s, 'salacious' comics were the target | CBC News
In 1954, the province established the Advisory Board on Objectionable Publications to investigate "crime comics" that supposedly inspired undesirable behaviour in kids.

Why are they still banning books in 2025? Graphic novels are seen as a threat because they are so effective. LGBTQ+ is seen as a threat because it undermines the Patriarchy. The Patriarchy has been oppressing women and minorities for centuries, and it needs to be gotten rid of.

#Comics and us sharing our stories save lives.

Removing books from the shelf is erasure and #censorship.

68% of Albertans believe decisions about what’s age-appropriate should be made by librarians, teachers, and schools - not administrations.

Let’s fight back (cc: @torontocomics.bsky.social)

I had a blast at #TCAF last weekend. It's always fun to chat comics with other comic creators. Here's a look at what I brought back with me… and there's a few books I forgot to circle back and get. This year's haul was significantly larger than last year! #TCAF2025 @torontocomics.bsky.social
