I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I live in the Big Smoke (London), and whilst not central, the light pollution is still such that the Aurora is not visible to me; not now, and not during the Great Spectacular last year. 🥲
Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation

crying about whales in the club
Australia's humpback whales are doing so well that their population is expected to reach carrying capacity and plateau in the near future--they have not just reached but exceeded pre-whaling numbers. For this to happen with such a long-lived, slow-reproducing species is near miraculous. #goodnews
These whales were hunted to 150 individuals. Now there are 50,000 of them
Once hunted almost to extinction, the population of humpback whales currently migrating down Australia's east coast has bounced back and is now greater than before whaling.

And for those of you wondering how this may apply to you: If you create media for adults, or do any sort of work for the queer community, this could potentially affect you as well. You might not consider yourself a sex worker, but a lot of religionists sure think you are. Please, sign this petition.

for context, my masters degree is in human rights law, and i was awarded a prize for coming top of the human rights law degree cohort and for the highest marked dissertation for the entire law department that year

this was at arguably one of the top 3 English Unis for Law as well
What a great prompt

As a prize human rights scholar (brag brag) I believe that the Western version of human rights, while a wonderful thing, is frequently used as a colonising tool, with some using it as a license to subjugate and kill - in this sense it replaced the fiction of 'civilization'
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Just a reminder that class-based inequality didn't exist at all for hundreds of thousands of years after the earliest H. sapiens fossils first appear. There is nothing "natural" about hoarding wealth. Rather, sharing & exchange to create bonds of solidarity are more the norm.
As I explain in Holding It Together, we got ourselves into our current mess, in part, by treating billions as a proxy for brilliance. That assumption has allowed billionaires to amass obscene amounts of power. And to exploit the rest of us for their gain.

Holding It Together by Jessica Calarco: 9780593538128 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books
Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women. Holding It Together chronicles the causes and dire consequences. America runs on women—women who are tasked with holding society...
