The Toronto Circus Riot broke out on this day 170 years ago — sparked by a brawl between angry clowns and firefighters at a Victorian brothel.

Here's my annual thread about one of the strangest stories in Canadian history...

Anyway, one of my very strongly held feelings in the last 5 months is that the American people are not victims.

They are perpetrators.

If the American public really wanted this to stop, they could be doing a lot more than they're currently doing.

My column this week: the grim reality of getting around in southern Ontario. Recently a bright future, there’s the catastrophic failure of Deutsche Bahn, lack of metrolinx ambition, no leadership from Ford & silly distractions w tunnels & bike lane attacks. Ford to city: enjoy the traffic.
Shawn Micallef: How Doug Ford and Metrolinx dimmed Toronto’s once-bright transit future
Neither the provincial transit agency nor its political boss has given any sign they want to transform the system so it works as good as the world’s best.

If you ban Calvin and Hobbes you’re a straight up fascist son of a bitch and that’s that
How profoundly sad. The kids deprived of reading Calvin and Hobbes are the kids who need them the most. My brother put it best: "We know we’re fucked when they come for your cartoon stuffed tigers."

Let's go sit in the grass and crack open "The Days are Just Packed."

TCAF was kind of incredible. A spectacular reminder of the importance of art, community & in-person engagement during a difficult time. I struggle with the idea that my work is good for anything these days but seeing the amazing community TCAF & comics as a whole has built … it’s wonderful. ❤️

U.S. wine export markets have contracted substantially. In April, the year-over-year export value dropped by 41.4%, worsening the 28% decline recorded in March. The three main export destinations for U.S. wine—Canada (-93%), the UK (-29%), and China (-70%)—all reported significant decreases.

This is the most specific argument I've heard for reducing tariffs on Chinese EVs to stimulate competition and adoption of electric cars (like Europe did...something I didn't know).

Let's be clear: three of the four books flagged by the Alberta government today as containing "inappropriate content" feature queer and trans people.

This is moral panic.

This is the same blueprint of book bans in the US.

And this is happening in Canada.

Peter David passed away today. I loved his comics as a teenager. This is such a nice anecdote to remember him by:
Really sorry to hear about Peter David; his work with Star Trek was among the best of the '90s licensed material. I only met him once; it was when I would do part-time at the local comic shop for store credit.
