Between 1996 and 2024, sales of AOP wine in France declined by 1.424 million hl (-29%). Most of this decline is due to Bordelais (-652,802 hl, -44%), Vallée du Rhône (-324,408 hl, -32%), and Languedoc-Roussillon (-204,789 hl, -45%). In contrast, AOP sales of Burgundy wines increased by 14%.

Main Wine Exporters to Venezuela, 1990-2024:
Wine exports to Venezuela reached its peak in 2006, with a total value exceeding US$45 million. Subsequently, exports—particularly those originating from Chile—collapsed to less than US$9 million in 2015.

In 2024, wine exports to Venezuela totaled only US$14.3 million. Chile (US$4.3 million), Spain (US$3.8 million), Italy (US$2.7 million), and Argentina (US$1.7 million) together accounted for 88% of total wine exports to Venezuela.

What should be taxed? Germany and Italy did not tax wine—but instead taxed sugar and salt. Neither the United States nor the United Kingdom had a sugar tax or a salt tax.

Little known fact: Germany (the world’s largest cheese exporter by both weight and value) has a positive cheese trade balance with Italy. It exports more cheese to Italy than it imports from Italy, though the gap has narrowed.

The European Union's wine self-sufficiency rate was 113.6% for the year 2024/25. This means that domestic production exceeded domestic consumption by 13%, which is about the average over the last 20 years.
