I don't usually go in for awards and such but this means an awful lot, both because it's my work being recognized by peers, and because I remember Bobby Nunes fondly. It's also one of the video essays I am proudest of.
We're thrilled to announce @amabel.bsky.social's video essay “Vonnegut’s Board Game: Preservation, Annotation, Context” as the recipient of the 2025 Bobby Nunes Memorial Award. More info on the award here: sdhist.com/amabel-holla.... Check out the essay here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xXy...

okay turns out there will be a video essay, probably for the one after what I'm working on presently, because I FOUND THE DESIGNER

HE'S STILL ALIVE

I AM INTERVIEWING HIM

HE GAVE ME A LIST of 50+ BOARD GAMES IN ADDITION TO THE 3 HE'S CURRENTLY CREDITED WITH
no video essay this time, but after digging this out to take this photo, I thought "maybe I should try again to find out who designed this". 🧵

psst @boardgamegeek.com this has continued to sit. It is deeply, deeply weird to have a game that's currently in-print that has a correct name on the publisher's website & everywhere else, and a different wrong name in your database only
Inexplicably, someone on BGG at some point changed the title of my game "II Grass II Crown" to "The Grass Crown II". I submitted a request for it to be changed back but it's such a bizarre thing to have happened. Like, it's really inscrutable to me tbqh

my understand is that basically nobody reads #2 in a trilogy anymore until #3 comes out, readers have been scared off by too many unfinished trilogies, which also means it gets basically no marketing budget and just gets dropped out there to swing back to when the trilogy completes

I remember someone saying that's how you know AI can never truly be a writer. If you tell AI to stop using em dashes, it'll stop. If you tell a writer to stop using em dashes they'll tell you to fuck yourself and that you can pry them from their cold, dead fingers.

Authors: If you found out that your publisher(s) failed to register with the U.S. Copyright Office, we can help. We provide ongoing legal assistance to our members and advocate for their work, particularly in the face of ongoing AI-related theft.
I am lightly horrified by how many people have now looked up their books and found out their publishers (who often were required contractually!!!!) just... didn't register the copyrights on books. Not all of them! Just sporadically!

This is not just one publisher, I've seen all the big ones now.
Today is the day authors are learning how many of their publishers straight up blew off registering copyright and I feel like that deserves a class action suit of its own if it costs everyone their settlement money from the Anthropic suit... 😒🤬

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who's coming to save you?

Empress Lu Yuan is a huge badass, I think I'll be fine, but also extremely heartbroken when I realize her fate. Prof nerd Shen Bu Yan though, just gets in the way.
