my understand is that basically nobody reads #2 in a trilogy anymore until #3 comes out, readers have been scared off by too many unfinished trilogies, which also means it gets basically no marketing budget and just gets dropped out there to swing back to when the trilogy completes

(fwiw, re book 3: I've handed in a draft, publisher has said edit notes should come back in the next couple of months, there are some verrrrry tentative dates I don't wanna give out until we're fully locked-in, but the wheels ARE turning)
