These ridiculous mega-projects like "datacenters in space" (doomed by thermodynamics) make a LOT more sense when you realize they're massive Ponzi schemes designed to transfer wealth from pension funds to VC's through "fee stacking."

It's the old Assets Under Management con. It should be illegal.
“.. Skeptics believe the technical risks are being underestimated and say space-based data centers won’t be competitive on cost, especially if power and other constraints ease on the ground.”

On a call, when they say "I'll let you go" I always reply "no I'm fine, I don't need to go". Of course I know what they mean, but I'll keep it going till they actually say they want to end the call. It's the best way to stop them calling me again.

I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*

I think the toxic current correlation between “studied STEM” and “techbro sociopathy” isn’t really about the subject matter itself but is about how our culture has spent 25 years constantly blowing smoke up the asses of guys who are even passably competent at Computer or Quant
there is not any particularly strong evidence that study of the humanities make people good people. the elites of many brutal empires were extremely well-read!

The only surefire way to stop oligarchs buying up the things we love is to drop those things the moment oligarchs buy them & that requires changing habits and massive self-discipline.
It means going to alternatives that might not be quite as good or convenient.
It’s really hard. But there it is.

AI automation =/= AI generation. the scripts to automatically transcribe voice to text or whether your party character prioritizes Attack or Defense isn't the same as algorithms generating randomized results out of an amalgamation of existing data. conflating them is intentionally misleading.

if I, for instance, were insuring a business against litigation I would be paying close attention to a cohort that appears to a) be on a legal hair-trigger b) have the backing of what amounts to a slush fund for such litigation; i.e., it’s not just the individuals, it’s an organised front
HR departments countrywide need to start treating gendercrit employees as potentially hostile. As soon as you are required to interact with one, you dust off the rulebook, you dot every eye and cross every t, and you assume bad faith at every turn.

They are a threat to every organisation.

People say this a lot and it's a fundamental misunderstanding of the "GPUs" in question.

Server GPUs are not graphics cards as you know them. They won't work in your PC. They have a few other uses but their main strength is computation, number crunching.

When the bubble pops most will end up junk.
On the plus side it’ll be a lot easier to get a GPU once the bubble bursts and those things are liquidated for pennies on the dollar

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

The Biden admin didn’t even want to mention Republicans in WH press releases. They worried this would violate the Hatch Act and consulted legal counsel. Really! That’s how wide the gulf in basic political warfare is between the two parties. GOP is in full battle. The Democrats are out to lunch.

The democratic establishment, people like Joe Biden, won’t even consider SCOTUS reform let alone push for it. So why wouldn’t SCOTUS kick sand in their faces? All Democrats ever do is take it.
The Supreme Court and the GOP in general behave the way they do not because they fear Trump but because they DON'T fear Democrats.

IQ is a measure of how good you are at IQ tests, which is something informed by how familiar you are with taking academic tests (& thus the quality of your school, which is in part determined by your parents' wealth, etc). there's nothing in particular that makes them a good test of intelligence

"Glad I already built my PC!" Oh did you? Did you get a good deal, and everybody else can go fuck themselves? That's super, I'm glad you announced it just before the holidays people were counting on for deals to finally upgrade.
Important to note that the reason RAM is more expensive isn't because OpenAI is ransacking store shelves and buying all the retail stock.

They aren't using those. Instead "AI" companies dumped an insane amount of money on RAM manufacturers to tie up their production lines with parts "AI" needs.
