if i could snap my fingers and force all journalists everywhere to implement one linguistic tic i think i'd mandate "cars (which kill more than 3,000 people every day)"
Cars, which kill hundreds of New Yorkers every year, are allowed to go 10 mph above the speed limit before they get ticketed by speed cams.
Lyft initially declined to comply with Mayor Adams's proposed e-bike speed limit, pledging instead to slap speedometers and let riders self-regulate.

But that's before Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro stepped in and called the bikes "an emergency threat to life and property." buff.ly/ZOq4T0g

if you don't believe this run a search for "the sin of empathy"
The attack on DEI shows why liberals should stop arguing about "strategic" use of language forever. DEI stands for three uncontroversial virtues that most every American accepts, and the right still turned it into a vile slur. It doesn't matter what you say - they will poison it because YOU said it.

Anyone that wants to build a leftist movement in the US and doesn’t think that radical political education needs to be at the center of it should not be trusted.

No more “it’s not my job to educate you.” We need to educate everyone. We need people to be angry that they are being robbed.

Reminder #1: we are going to have to fight regardless who wins. Yes, it sucks if it gets worse than we thought but we were always gonna have to fight.

Reminder #2: not everything will be done tonight.

Reminder #3: As long as we’re here, there’s something worth fighting for.

The externalities (damages we endure but are not reflected in the cost of gasoline) of congestion, crashes, air pollution, climate change, and noise easily add up to another $3/gallon. Congestion is one of the biggest costs.
Just gonna put this out there that I don’t know a single serious urbanist who believes in a “no cars at all” position and it’s rather exhausting to see smart people bring up this straw man. Asking drivers to pay for the negative externalities they cause does not equal “ban cars.”

The idea that replacing oil with lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite would somehow intrinsically put our transportation system on a fundamentally more sustainable and equitable footing (carbon aside) is one of the most wild of all the neoliberal delusions.

it honestly just makes me so mad that a handful of greedy assholes have stolen all the creative work of every human being and all the wonderful and weird things people did on the internet and are now using it to take our jobs and make the internet a shitty wasteland

just in case you're wondering how it's going in the liberal stronghold of california, a freeway widening project for the causeway over a floodplane was just approved unanimously despite substantial pushback on account of it being in violation of environmental laws.

caltrans is addicted to concrete.

Gorz: "In the final analysis, the car wastes more time than it saves and creates more distance than it overcomes. Of course, you can get yourself to work doing 60 mph, but that’s because you live 30 miles from your job and are willing to give half an hour to the last 6 miles."
we're not talking "fun time at the track" either, we're talking about the basic necessity of moving around the world that has been forcibly colonized by endless miles of asphalt to reach increasingly distant locations.

the worst part about LA is that another 25% is devoted to TALKING about cars too

it cannot be said enough that the students are literally just chanting and linking arms in an open field. there are no laws being broken. and they're nearly outnumbered by cops in riot gear.
Denver cops with rubber bullet guns are pulling and shoving peaceful student protesters chanting and linking arms.

I'm the guy that told Mark Zuckerberg he should start wearing a thin gold chain. I run an Executive Swag Consultancy called Bal.lr and charged him $375,000 for that advice, and I instantly invested it in a cryptocurrency that lost half its value in the next 90 minutes.
