I Played My Cat Some Magnificats,
And This Was His Response:
An Entirely Unacademic Study.

Rubbra in A flat
- Very excited meowing.

Stanford in C
- Purring, meowed when it stopped.

Murrill in E
- No audible reaction; he looked out the window.

Gray in F minor
- Meowed and left the room.

This is great advice. I've discovered so many things I would never have known I liked just by showing up at something.
Don’t think you’re too lowbrow to go to a cultural event, they’ll appreciate that you’re there, you’ll always get something out of it, and it’s how you start building the vocabulary

Hair follicles? A bamboo grove? These are the super-octave pipes of St Marks organ in Auckland, New Zealand. Usually hidden from view through a series of ladders and trapdoors. They’re each about 1cm wide.

A nebula? Something more anatomical… this is an Australian Yidaki or #Didgeridoo. They’re not carved out by hand, but are eaten out by termites! Hence the organic structure. One of the most surprising instruments I’ve photographed.

Employers should not be using AIs to interact with their employees unless they want the employees to cut corners in the same way. If a training or email chain is run by an AI, that’s the quickest way to convey that you don’t give a shit, and your employees will follow suit

'German Small Town by Night,' is one in a series of caricatures Georg Scholz made between 1919 and 1923 in which he mocked the bourgeois ideal of the small German town and the pleasures and orderliness of life to be found there.

A meditation on the language in the Lumon-esque new website the San Francisco Symphony management has made, what it might mean to actually listen to patrons' voices during a time of crisis, and a cameo from Seth Milchick 🙏

1. @alisongopnik.bsky.social, Cosma Shalizi, James Evans and myself have a new piece in Science on "AI" Large Models, pushing back against much of the collective wisdom about what they can and can't do. Official below, unpaywalled at henryfarrell.net/large-ai-mod... . So why this now?
Large AI models are cultural and social technologies
Implications draw on the history of transformative information systems from the past

If you need to vanish into a rabbit hole for a little while, may I recommend the Eunice Norton archive on youtube.

She was a great pianist born in Minneapolis in 1908, and apparently the first person to record the complete Goldberg Variations on piano. 💕
