“But Toad,” said Frog, “I AM happy. I am very happy. This morning when I woke up, I felt good because the sun was shining. I felt good because I was a frog. And I felt good because I have you for a friend. I wanted to be alone. I wanted to think about how fine everything is.”

Someone has purchased the Manhole Covers book at last. I don’t know how I feel about this moment. Did I love the Manhole Covers book after all and only, tragically, realize it too late? Have I grown accustomed to its subdued greyscale presence on my shelf? Godspeed, little book.

Early December and I am still gathering vegetables from the garden: greens, herbs, turnips. I feel overwhelmed by gratitude.

I have books I don’t know what to do with and I’m old and my mentors are long gone. I feel unprepared to be the old bookseller now. Melancholy feeling.

Shipping some danmei off to a tiny town in Texas today. I always loved mailing weird/cool/lefty/subculture books off to tiny American towns but it truly feels better than ever right now.

Really interesting read on creating micro forests in limited space. Offrange always has such cool agriculture and ecology reads!
Make Your Own Micro Forest - Offrange
The Miyawaki method of reforestation inserts small, densely packed wild acreage into urban environs. It’s proving wildly successful.

a new small post on 柏舟 ("Cypress Boat") from the Book of Songs (c 600 BCE).

My heart is not a mirror
To reflect what others will

My heart is not a stone
It cannot be rolled

My heart is not a mat
It cannot be folded away

Our medical system is ALREADY pretty un functional and what’s about to happen is going to make it much, much worse for all of us. My nerves need a break.

I have stacks of things too beat up to list but too cool to pitch. Maybe someone is looking for a copy of this for super, super cheap? It’s hard to find. But very messed up.

Grateful to spend two days on the Klamath watching chinook, liberated by dam removal, return to streams from which they’d been precluded since the Titanic sank. Fish are everywhere, in numbers that stagger the mind & locations that biologists figured would take years to repopulate. Too beautiful.

Friends, if you haven’t seen Dhoom 2 you are missing out. Mamdani using “Dhoom Machale” as his walkoff music is kind of analogous to the Mission: Impossible movie theme—only waaaay sexier.

Dancing frogs have become a symbol of resistance in the USA.

Interestingly, over a decade ago David Graeber wrote a piece on the power of such symbols in protest movements.

The piece is called - On the Phenomenology of Giant Puppets. Here is an extract.
