The Italian cover of Absolution, from my wonderful publisher there, Einaudi. Out next year. Translated by Cristiana Mennella. The artist is Lorenzo Ceccotti and the inspiration here is the biologist's expedition in part 1 of the novel. Just a stunning cover. Amazing.

Other honorable mentions. The Sabrina Carpenter album is not as consistent as the previous but the highs are higher. Manchild is great, and so is When Did You Get Hot? Several Lola Young songs were quite nice. Lady Gaga too. Turnstile is a delightful discovery. PinkPantheress finally won me over.

#PeoplesPop25 7/7 Last Pick. I have not been strategic. This isn't going to get very far. But I simply haven't heard a lyric that surpasses "God damn baby you drink like Hemingway / But your writing's no good and your songs all sound the same" all year. youtu.be/OD6DdnPpZd4?...

#PeoplesPop25 I probably should be playing more strategically here but I am appalled that this isn't even on the nominations list. I would put it in the "Strange Bop" category. youtu.be/B6QUT0Re_8Q?...

#PeoplesPop25 I really think Chappell Roan's songcraft which was already at a high level is improving by leagues with each new release. This is a grower, not as immediately gripping but the little details really add up to a crushing, heartrending whole.

@peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social I only caught on today that we were starting and I'm not online tomorrow so I hope it's acceptable to post seven tracks on the last day. If not, you can count this one as my nomination. #PeoplesPop25 youtu.be/6Kjz89xYmS4?...

What's poignant about watching Christmas Vacation in 2025 is how much of the plot revolves around Clark's promised Christmas Bonus -- a practice that has been largely phased out by now for anyone who ever had access to this year-end windfall. Does anyone still get Christmas bonuses?

"Doormats" would really imply the opposite of cutting off contact, wouldn't it? That the kids were staying around and mistreating their parents, rather than fleeing them? Makes me think this is the Moms' natural state of grievance that probably made their kids run screaming in the first place.
Welcome to the pissed-off parent pushback: After years of therapists and others encouraging adult children to cut ties with families they deem harmful or “toxic,” estranged parents are speaking out on.wsj.com/4s49U52

My moment of joy this year was the dance sequences in Sinners, specifically the time-collapsing number where every genre and period appeared and melted together. Transcendent, I ascended into heaven for a few minutes.
2025 has been a rough year. What's one piece of art that's brought you absolute joy despite everything?

One problem with this take is the number of high profile white millennial men in the media...

Andre Braugher duh
This is a fun question—best “serious” actor in a comedic role of the last decade?
It’s so much easier for comic actors to do drama than vice versa. Look at Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine or Truman Show, and then look at De Niro’s comedies, they’re terrible

When you hire a white man because they’re a white man that’s not identity politics. Identity politics is when you get hired and you’re not a white man. The anti wokeness hysteria was always a backlash to integration of white collar jobs bsky.app/profile/jami...
Hiring a Black woman: “identity politics”

Hiring a white guy for a job that has been held disproportionately by white guys, because he is a white guy: “subverting” identity politics!

(The author of this sentence is Dylan Byers; you will not be surprised to learn that he is a white guy.)
