SFF author from Austin, TX. they/them
"I can't afford it" well 1) that's what libraries are for and 2) it was literally 99c at the time.

Authors make hardly any money and you steal from us anyway, making it even worse.

Don't pirate books. Ever. For any reason.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

I'd never heard of this site until tonight. Both my books are on there. Did you know my publisher offers one of three lowest royalty rates in the entire industry? And that I didn't get an advance? Literally all I make is from royalties. Royalties I don't earn when you pirate my book.

Just so it's clear. It's not allowing AI because it's trying to create a clean dataset for training AI. It's not because any of the involved parties actually care about human created art.

Demons can lie to you. You have to rebuke them categorically, rather than fold when they say the right words.
Vine is being rebooted under the name diVine, with funding from Twitter’s former CEO Jack Dorsey.

The app plans to feature more than 10,000 previously archived Vines and does not allow AI-generated content.

This is so heartfelt and heartbreaking and just a little bit heartwarming.

Also, read Cinder House. It's both the story you know and a totally new one. As a person who has often felt trapped both in my home and in my body, it spoke very loudly to me.

I heard about MRM’s terrible contract and I have heard that individuals have negotiated a more reasonable contract. But MRM didn’t change their boilerplate.

SFF writers can’t unionize, but I won’t send stories to them until their contract is fair for every writer. Solidarity is solidarity.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

It's such a shame that the most prestigious markets in the business have been taken over by a company that values only profit--not profit over other values, but a complete absence of any value besides profit. Kudos to Scott for standing up for all of us even at the cost of a dream of half a century.

I've been a freelance education writer full time for over a decade. Two years ago was my best year on the books. Now I'm struggling to stay afloat and actively looking for full time work.

The apocalypse may not be widespread but within the creative arts it's very real.
How is AI *really* impacting jobs?

Henley Chiu, the CTO of Revealera, a jobs data analysis firm, analyzed 180 million jobs listings in 2024 and 2025, in an effort to find out. Chiu found an:

-8% drop in all jobs postings
-~30% drop in art, photography, writing jobs
-22% drop in journalism jobs
What’s really going on with AI and jobs?
Record-breaking layoff reports, Amazon's mass firings, and a slump in entry level employment. Is AI behind it all?

A friend gave me The Left Hand of Darkness in college and I realized I was doing literary analysis on my own for the first time in my life, thinking about it.

20 years later when I had Thoughts about gender it felt a little obvious that that was my fave book 😅
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

Ten years ago this week I was being released from the hospital having been diagnosed with cancer and barely surviving the removal of a third of my lung. I vowed to start taking writing seriously.

Today I wrote the final sentence in my novel manuscript.

Promise: kept.
