SFF author from Austin, TX. they/them
My early stories were pretty general SFF but lately I've been more focused on romantasy (although I haven't fully left SFF behind).

#PretendPanel #WriterSky
#pretendpanel, thanks for your answers yesterday. It's a journey, and I love to see all the different stages among us.

January 3rd: How has your work evolved in terms of subject matter (e.g. setting, premise, vibes) since your earlier writings?

Just going to start saying "Ew, only pedos use AI" around the normies in my life and hope that shame by association works better than logic or evidence

In 2015 I was hospitalized with some scary symptoms and truly thought I was at the end of my life. I had always written stories but never shared them. I realized I wasn't a storyteller without an audience, I was a daydreamer. Three years later my first story was published in Analog.

#PretendPanel
Welcome to January, #pretendpanel! I want to hear all about your change/growth/evolution as a writer over time. People often forget what a journey it is!

January 2nd: What do you consider to be the beginning of your writing career?

No one looks nonbinary.

Androgynous, maybe, but those are not synonyms.

Nonbinary folks slant masc, femme, androgynous, or are fluid. You do not know looking at someone. Asking for preferred pronouns is a kindness this nonbinary femme appreciates. Thank you!

Hi, I'm lung cancer. And then a different kind of cancer resulting from that cancer.
Hello, I'm a ruptured brain aneurysm.

I thought I couldn't name my fave book of 2025 bc I don't use Goodreads or anything BUT I discovered that Libby keeps a list so I can confidently say that THE SECRET LIVES OF COUNTRY GENTLEMEN by @kjcharleswriter.com was my top book of the year.

Thanks to both of you for hosting! I had a blast and learned there is beautiful variety among smut slingers.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
That's it, #Smutcember! A hearty thank you from me and @hookandquillpress.com to everyone who participated.💜

Let us know what you learned this month and who you'd acknowledge in your published smut!

BONUS: If you have it, share some spicy character art!

The year is 2035. I meet President AOC in the Oval Office. "Well done," she says. "By pointing out the small ways certain outfits don't follow outdated rules, you've lowered the population rate by 90%, thereby reducing carbon emissions." She slides me a manilla envelope. I can now afford a home.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

These are fairly interchangeable to me. I really think use depends a lot on social context. I might say erotica to a publisher, smut to readers, and porn to my friends.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Something of a reflective topic for today's #Smutcember prompt:

What are the differences between porn, smut, and erotica to you? What's something you wish was better understood about these distinctions, or these styles/genres in general?

I generally use common, straightforward terms. Not anatomical, we're not in medical school, but not euphemisms so flowery you're not actually sure what's happening.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
For today's #Smutcember prompt:

Word choice has come up often as tricky territory for style, preference, and squicks. With regards to terminology, do you prefer anatomical terms, euphemisms, or synonyms?

Lir and Faris communicate decently well. At first their communication is a bit hostile but once they start getting along it gets more kind.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Hope you're having a restful Friday, #Smutcember! Today's question:

How well do your characters communicate? This could be verbally or non-verbally, and it could be outside of, before, after, or during intimate encounters.

It varies. Sometimes the story begins from kink in which case it's important to know what's going in the mix from the jump. Other times it shows up on its own as I write and I just roll with it.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, #Smutcember! I'm partial to the Yule vibes myself, but any excuse for a little holiday spice. 😏 With that in mind, we ask you:

Do you plan your characters with specific kinks, or do they arise organically?

A sex scene should be at least as much what's going on in the characters' heads as what's happening to their bodies. That's where the real impact is.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Time to share some wisdom, #Smutcember:

What advice would you give others about writing smut? Alternatively, if you're newer to writing smut, what advice would you like to get from your fellow participants?

I don't think any family have yet. I know a few friends have, but my work isn't a secret, so there might be friends who've read it I don't know about.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Considering that many of you may be spending time with loved ones this month, #Smutcember:

Who among your friends and family has read your smut? Has it been a positive experience sharing it with them?

There are plenty of animals but no fantastic ones. They're the normal animals we have in this world: horses, cattle, sheep, etc., and some wild ones as well.

#DecemberWorldbuilders #WriterSky
It's the fourth week of #DecemberWorldbuilders! The theme is ANIMALS. I will ask for some very specific creatures, so if you haven't done any animal-related worldbuilding, feel free to take a break! No need to tell me you haven't done it!

Any magical animals in your world?

I've thought about writing a Captive Prince AU in which Lir and Faris are both pets but I think I need to write the actual book first. 😅

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Here's a fun exercise to start your week, #Smutcember:

If you were to write a sexy AU for any of your characters, what’s the setup, and who’s hooking up? If you HAVE written (or drawn!) such an AU already, feel free to share it!

Why decline all these chances to defend feminism? Because to participate would be accepting the premise that our rights and humanity are up for debate in the first place.

Once you’ve conceded that it’s reasonable to ask whether women’s equality was a mistake, you’ve already lost.

Not really. I have trunked stories, and I've written a few things without HEAs, but that's not exactly the same thing.

#Smutcember #WriterSky
Today's #Smutcember prompt:

Are there any characters you wanted to get together, but couldn’t get it to work? What do you do when the chemistry just isn't clicking?
