the problem with even trying to rigorously count utils is that you can count any number of utils you want by shifting your time window and your probability estimates.
Anecdotally, I've noticed that people who try to be virtuous, regardless of their particular virtue set, end up as good people who do good for the world. Those who say they are utilitarian, have a very mixed record with the balance being assholes who make things worse.
