A friendly reminder that we all thought the 2016 election would be a no-brainer. If you're registed, please, don't listen to the polls, don't assume - vote.

In the midst of a global tree-planting frenzy, a different approach says that the best way to restore forests is to allow them to restore themselves. In a lifetime of observing tropical and temperate forests, I have come to think this is true. Not all forests can restore themselves, but many can.
215 million hectares of forest – an area bigger than Mexico – could grow back by itself, if we can just leave it alone
It’s vital we find cost-effective ways to get and keep more trees in the ground. Our research looked at where natural regeneration is likely to be successful due to environmental conditions.

Don’t even think about jinxing this thing, is what I’m saying…

Yes.
Extractive capitalism requires disposable people and disposable places. That's what Trump is celebrating, why he calls people "garbage," "scum," "vermin." Why he calls places "shitholes," "filthy," "cesspools," why he describes America as a "hellhole" and "the "garbage can for the world."

Look at this front porch. Really look at it. The entire PA town where I canvassed today looked like this. Towns all across America look like this.

Fuck macroeconomics. Until the Democrats manage to pass policy that really renews this country, the fascist threat will never go away.

Arguably an even better way of putting it...

- 1 container ship of solar panels = a quarter century of energy

- 1 container ship of fossil gas = six months of energy

Can't believe I got baited into reading a Brett Stepnens column ― though somehow comforted that all remains stable in the universe. It was a piece of crap.

What if we rapidly cut methane and other high-GWP gases to curb short-term warming while we phase out carbon?

This is what we proposed in 1999; and our findings were even presented to Congress.

We’d have a very different world if we’d done it then—but even if we start now, it’s better than not!

Forget not being able to solve the root cause of a problem from within the worldview that created it, we are moving into territory where we can't even *cope* with problems from within the worldview that created them.

Thread…
It finally happened. A huge storm hit Kotzebue. My dad's house is on the beach side of town. The water was so high that my cousin had to evacuate my dad. Neighbors front porch was washed away, and that before high tide. I am so glad my cousin was there. Please keep the town in your thoughts.

Ours is not a story about villains, it is a story about systems.

But there are most definitely villains.
Docs obtained by the @washingtonpost.com reveal a "comprehensive [fossil fuel] industry effort to reverse climate initiatives," which "contrasts with the public pledges...members have made to their investors and customers to support aggressive regulation of methane."

I’ve heard relatively little discussion over the best reason to vote for Kamala Harris and that is that Samuel Alito wants to retire and Clarence Thomas is 80 years old and we either can replace them with Ketanji Brown Jackson or 35 year old Samuel Alito and 35 year old Clarence Thomas

If comparing huge new power demand for AI to electrification, consider:

- People desperately want to save $$ through electrification, but bottlenecks like cost, materials, politics stops them

- People desperately DO NOT want generative slop, but corporations are forcing it down their throats

Wisdom.
Ready to haul out the rake or leaf blower? Resist the temptation. Leaf litter in the forest or your yard has important benefits for critters - insects, small vertebrates, fungi, and others - and for soil nutrient cycles. Leave them in place, put them in out-of-the-way piles, or compost them.
