If folks really studied the history of the civil rights movement (not just the feel good parts), then one would learn how the lying about the violence coming from ICE, CPB, and this administration reflects this history. It is not an aberration. One would be naive to argue that "this isn't America."

I am very happy to be back in Australia but I did not come back here for the weather. I left the US because it was very unsafe and I remain very worried about my friends and colleagues. I can’t talk to people here about it yet, they have no idea what it was like or how bad it’s going to get.

Since I’ve left the US I’m having trouble even looking at the news, not a deliberate choice so much as a physical PTSD response. I just can’t.

We came into Southbank today so I could join the State Library - they were so helpful and already identified some stuff relevant to my next project. My plan is to work from here two days a week on two fellowship and a new book proposal.

Day three of being back in Australia, applied to put my name back on the electoral roll and it took about 5 minutes online. Can’t wait to vote in an actual democracy again.

Signs you’re back in Australia: four excellent coffee shops in the airport, triple j playing Tame Impala on the radio, driving with the windows down, the smell of salt in the air.

Wheels down in Sydney my home town where it’s pouring rain, the degrees are in Celsius the distance in kilometres, the government in democracy and I am sad. My heart leapt with joy when we touched down.

There is something to be said for seeing your book on sale in a store and seeing it sell out all but one copy
