Orwell is my spirit animal on this, especially his essay on how "fascism" was meaningless even after the war.
Orwell always maintained that sloppy language leads to sloppy thinking. Precision is important.

Let me get this straight, republicans control every single branch of government but democrats shut down the government.

As I’m an American citizen in a targeted blue city, I don’t like the sounds of this, not one bit.
the president of the united states wants to use the american military to kill american citizens on american soil. that's the whole story!

Honestly, the tone in democratic leadership is the stuff of nightmares. Who is this trying to convince? It’s so disappointing.
The crime scene in D.C. most damaging to everyday Americans is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

This is what a fundamentally broken economy, society, culture looks like. Pick your description, whatever you want to call it… it’s broken.
94% of teachers have had to dip into their own pockets to buy school supplies. An estimated 1 in 6 have second jobs during the school year to make ends meet.

The average Wall Street employee got a record $244,700 bonus last year.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

It's become clear that this administration is just a protracted war on anybody who's read a book without pictures in it. It's a miracle we're all still getting up and going to work every morning. The psychological drain is the point, and I'm increasingly grateful to the people who are still decent.

Seems relevant.

Pretty good point.
I really don't see the point of making any more James Bond films. They have made twenty six movies trying to warn us about the destructive consequences of allowing billionaires to exist and we did not get the message.

Huge congratulations to Jane Bennett, whose 2010 masterpiece "Vibrant Matter" has received the 2025 Benjamin E. Lippincott Award from @apsa.bsky.social‬, which honors exceptional work by a living political theorist that is still considered significant after at least 15 years. buff.ly/r4KpD5a

I mean. Obviously the NYT has little say in the veracity of peeps being made.

“Foxes are in the henhouse.” Says henhouse guard.

Agreed. Portland always feels a world apart, but specifically so right now. Shit will really hit the fan when half the state is on fire in August though.
a thing i've been thinking about as of late is how remote the west coast feels in this second administration, moreso than in the first admin and moreso than any other point i can remember.

What’s it called when the puppet candidate is run by idiots?
"Is that it?" -- Trump did that thing again today where he signs a bunch of executive orders but doesn't seem to know what he's signing and needs to have it explained to him

They must not be able to imagine Sisyphus happy.
“I got a job in Canada because I’m scared of where this country is going” does not send the heroic, bold message these guys think it does, especially after they’ve let it just become a huge media blitz.

This is amazing!! I would love to do this for businesses. Can you imagine how priceless and full of bullshit that would be?
I started a new thing at Carleton College! It highlights the breadth of a liberal arts education, reminds students that faculty don't know EVERYTHING, and is loads of fun!

In "Guess Lectures," faculty give 7-minute talks using someone else’s slides from an unrelated discipline, sight unseen.

We’re being governed by the absolute worst people. Imagine waking up and believing this poop garbage. Some of them are play acting to enrich themselves, but this guy actually believes his own lies.
Stephen Miller says they are “actively looking at” suspending the writ of habeas corpus, which is only allowed when the US has been invaded or during an insurrection, which would not allow people to challenge their incarceration in court if they are arrested and detained.

This is a meaningful distinction. Critique is the answer, always.
anyway 1) most people who say the parties are the same are engaging in hyperbole 2) both parties serve the wealthy at the expense of humanity’s continued existence on earth 3) the parties do have differences that are important to understand so you can oppose them both
I'm seeing a lot more of my far left friends posting things like "both parties aren't the same after all" and "there are meaningful ideological divisions even amongst capital/the right/etc". which is good! We should move with the times. but I'm seeing less contrition about it than I'd hope
