BREAKING: Federal judge in Pittsburgh blocks DOJ's invasive trans care subpoena.

The latest loss for DOJ, regarding the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's patients, also brings news that DOJ has started scaling back its requests following its many losses.

The ending!
June 2018. I'm in court defending a woman in her late 30s, who was charged with possession of marijuana

School's out for the summer, so she has her high school-aged son with her

I think it’s important to insist on recalling, at all available opportunities, that this was specifically an attack on a trans instructor over an assignment about gender. Neither of those details are incidental; they are the center of the story
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

The University of Oklahoma has removed an instructor who was accused by a student of religious discrimination over a failing grade on a psychology paper in which she cited the Bible and argued that promoting a “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.” https://cnn.it/4b6g3rd

Poetic.
Turning Point USA was founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk and Bill Montgomery

Two of their major policy pushes were a more prominent gun culture and zero COVID restrictions

Bill Montgomery died to the COVID virus

Charlie Kirk died to gun violence

It used to be that the United States would use Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to transmit truth across the borders of repressive regimes.

Now the work of American reporters, having been censored, is being smuggled across the border to reach Americans.
The 60 Minutes piece on the Trump Administration’s torture prison that Bari Weiss doesn’t want you to see has leaked.

Several options in this thread for watching the 60 Minutes CECOT segment that was pulled from yesterday's broadcast.
It looks like the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT was accidentally released in Canada. It'll be really interesting to compare this to whatever version Weiss might eventually release.

Found the actual men in women's bathrooms assaulting women.
ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.

WTF. A human being can't even take a leak in peace when it comes to the power-mad illegal acts of ICE gestapo of acting prez Temu Goebbels Stephen Miller. Eliminating dignity when it comes to ethnic cleansing gives him joy.

This is done in our name. This is who we are. 🇺🇸

When faced with an "or" question like this one re: Bari Weiss, an old friend used to say embrace the power of "and." Her advice has always stayed with me.
To everyone following the Bari Weiss story and struggling with the question of whether this is rank incompetence or malignity: Doesn't matter, because rank incompetence plus arrogance IS malignity, so even if you give her the benefit of the doubt (btw, there's no reason to), that's where you end up.

The full Weiss memo is dogshit
-who cares if administration figures “regret” sending people to CECOT
-who cares about the criminal histories of the people we sent to CECOT, we sent them to a torture prison
—who cares about the “debate” over the legality of sending people to a torture prison

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

this is how you know bari is incapable of operating at this level. pulling rank on some desperate lackey at the free press does not equip one with the requisite skills to try and fuck over a veteran correspondent who’s been on her network’s flagship program for more than a decade.
The New York Times updated their story with a statement from Bari Weiss:

Whoosh. This thread. Andrew, Atticus (really?), and George are 100% horrible humans who can only associate with their own kind.

Hah! I ask myself this question far too often.

And then I hear the voice of Martin Short as Nathan Thurm, the cigarette-smoking man from SNL, in my head. "Is it me or is it him? It's him, right?" 😉
Is everybody being real fucking annoying today or am I the problem? This is a rhetorical question and if you answer earnestly I will block you

We’re not even *close* to running out of good ideas. The issue is smart people’s ideas being systematically persecuted, under-resourced, and blocked from opportunity by fascists. Do not believe propaganda in the “Future Perfect” section of Vox that’s underwritten by Effective Altruism extremists.
This column on Vox is the biggest pile of steaming AI crap I've seen this year. Human's aren't running out of ideas. Instead, those with power and money don't want to listen to ideas that threaten their power and money.

Ideas are plentiful. Putting those ideas into action is the hard part.
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

I had a similar reaction when I saw his piece in @theatlantic.com.
Kind of unsettling to find this (male) author wrote a book about the feminist uprising in Iran. Women in Iran decided not to accept the countless little and not-so-little forms of abuse and repression, and some of them died for that stand.

I read a book on making money in ancient Athens recently (by Michael Leese, it's great), and the Greeks absolutely believed that the endless pursuit of wealth was a serious moral defect and personality issue no different than being a drunk or sexual deviant.
If you make a billion dollars — or $500 million or even $100 million dollars — and you keep trying to make more, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It's a mental illness akin to hoarding or drug addiction.

Eep. I got shingles in my late 20s and it was uncomfortable as all get out, to put it mildly. I didn't want to wear clothes or lay down in any position that aggravated my rashes. Definitely wouldn't wish it on folks my age (64yo) now. Our skin is thin and that can only mean more pain. Get vaxxed.
All over my FB people talking about their bad experiences with shingles vax and dissuading each other from getting it! We need to give people real info on how to mitigate the symtoms caused by vaccines because vaccines are always better than meeting a virus unprepared. Yet drs aren't coaching ppl

Sure. It will increase deportation stats but more importantly it will kill the self-deporters' chances of (a) getting the $1000 self-deportation payment the Kristi promised in her abhorrent tv ads, and (b) ever getting back into the country again.
Exclusive: ICE has developed a plan to arrest undocumented migrants who try to voluntarily leave the U.S. via the Mexico border, so they can face formal removal.

Why bother? Possibly to juice deportation numbers.

It's being referred to as "Operation Irish Goodbye."

This is worth the read. I'm old so PP abortion services are no longer applicable to me, but having a CEO who is willing to completely eliminate abortion-related care seems counterproductive, to put it mildly. Donate to local providers instead.

We're hosting a Christmas cocktail party later this month & I've been thinking about music. I love the Christmas playlist @clairewillett.bsky.social put together, and plan to copy it, while also adding some punk-y songs from the Pogues, Ramones, Kinks, Groovie Ghoulies, & Bad Religion.
