So here's where we are, Sunday morning:

Trump is trying to starve hungry kids in order to bully Democrats into abandoning our fight against health care premium increases.

So Trump is starving kids in order to deny families health care.

Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk:

-Is not accused of committing any crime

-Is nonviolent

-Was in this country legally

-Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to

-Has been locked up for six weeks
Now from Öztürk’s ACLU lawyer Esha Bhandari:

“Rümeysa Öztürk’s case is unprecedented and shocking. She has been held behind bars for six weeks while her health deteriorates for writing an op-ed.”

Good morning. A reminder that historically when the US has wanted to punish other countries, it imposed sanctions on them, cutting their people off from global trade, hoping to create enough economic havoc that they rein in their leaders.

Trump has imposed economic sanctions on the American people.

Excellent excellent excellent from Princeton president and constitutional/ political theorist Chris Eisgruber. There's been far too little of this kind of thing; here's hoping others follow his good example.

The Cost of the Government’s Attack on Columbia
American universities have given the country prosperity and security. The Trump administration’s attack on academic freedom endangers all of that.

Donald Trump is a fascist.

Americans of conscience must stand bravely against these attempts to silence speech and political dissent. Shame on Columbia’s administrators for their cowardice in a moment that demands institutional bravery.

Rubio's gutting of USAID is illegal and unconstitutional. There is no form of democracy anywhere of any kind that would allow the executive branch to unilaterally cancel budgets and programs passed by the legislative branch and signed into law. It's utter lawlessness.

This, plus a complete ban on federal contracts to Musk’s companies.
The things for Dems to ask for before any votes for appropriations:
1) compliance with past federal laws before any new appropriations law
2) Elon Musk out of government
3) only a 1-2 month funding bill to ensure Trump has to come back to Congress regularly and thus Congress can ensure compliance.
Johnson needs Dem votes to keep the government open.

AND he wants those votes to legitimate Elon's lawless destruction.

This is the Democrats' best chance to educate the public about the coup in progress.

Zero votes for Elon's coup must be our demand.

Right?

Such a travesty that the Demographic and Health Survey program was terminated this week.

I realize the Gates Foundation can't pick up all the pieces, but this one seems like a natural one for them to pick up given that the DHS is the go-to data source for many of their focus areas.
The Demographic and Health Surveys, a major effort supported by USAID and widely used across the world, are also not currently available.

This is an absolute scandal.

Trump and Marco Rubio abandoned American workers and their families abroad, delaying waivers to provide for their safe return to the United States.

As these civil servants lost their possessions, housing, and money, Elon Musk was slandering them with bogus accusations.
Via Robbie Gramer at Politico, in a legal filing a USAID employee details trying to leave Kinshasa, Congo with their family and leaving their possessions behidn amid panic created by Trump and Musk's sudden shutdown of the agency

Excited for my first AER:I pub (w/ @rdizonross.bsky.social). We use WTP for children's goods as a high-powered way to test how mothers vs. fathers spend on kids. Dads spend more on boys than girls. Moms don't. It's not an investment story--also holds for fun stuff. 📉📈
