Athena SWAN is scheme recognizing universities’ efforts to promote gender equality

It regards its job as done once awards are granted, regardless of workplace realities

It's superficial & self-protective. It legitimizes university behaviour rather than fixing things

arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

Some real fake news! Paper mills are creating fake authors who can then serve as fake reviewers. The illustration of the fake reviewer sitting at their desk is excellent. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

We're experiencing an unbelievable deluge of submissions. At our journal we got ~200 per year in 2020. Last year it was 600. This year it's 800 with several months to go. So that's why we're slower to get stuff out for review.

I’m in the paper again, this time complaining about how a lack of accommodation in #Dublin is causing long commutes for students, and forcing changes to how we teach. Article by @sunnibean.bsky.social. #HigherEducation #academia #Ireland #UCD
As the university year starts, lecturers are changing how they teach in response to the student accommodation crisis and long commutes. Some are turning to longer, less frequent, classes – but there’s a pedagogical trade-off, says UCD lecturer Keith Wilson.

For the EU, this should be a very urgent matter of national security. All EU member states should build on Denmark's wise strategy to phase out Microsoft products

What happened?

Everyone suddenly knew HTML. It ceased to differentiate you in the marketplace. It was like saying you knew how to use email. You couldn't really build a career on it.
