Idly wondering if the Rolling Stones will manage to continue playing for 50 years after Joe Strummer sang "no Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones, in 1977". Getting close now.

Regarding Reiner, I have known a lot of musicians and been in bands myself. I can’t overstate the importance of This Is Spinal Tap in adjusting the self-importance of musicians. Everyone knows the movie, everyone has identified Spinal Tap moments, everyone is humbler and funnier as a result.

This is exactly what the recent Trump-BBC 'scandal' was designed to achieve. The BBC is now self-censoring criticisms of Trump in the name of "impartiality"
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Judge for yourself: did the dossier accusing the BBC of doctoring a Trump quote…doctor a Trump quote?
Left: Donald Trump’s Jan 6th quote, as presented in the dossier that brought down two BBC bosses

Right: What Donald Trump actually said.

There’s a quite famous passage in Mein Kampf where Hitler recounts how his young self looked at a Jew in the street and asked himself “is this a German?” Change a few words and locations and I bet you could get it in the Spectator now.

The thing about the Overton window is that it just shifts by default if you let people propose insane policies like removing people with indefinite leave to remain without robust challenge. It doesn't just go away, it slowly leaks into the mainstream water supply unless you properly hose it down.

I can beat the medievalists! In 61 CE, revolting British natives attacked the Roman colony of Camulodunum (Colchester). In 2015, in a domestic space, archs found the remains of a whole box of coriander as well as fenugreek, poppy seeds, cumin, & other Indian spices. Homesick Roman women made curry.
I'm pretty sure there were Indian spices in England before potatoes.

The strange death of "socially liberal but fiscally conservative". Always largely self-serving bs, but in terms of people's expressed beliefs, a big part of the political spectrum has just vanished.
