Is there any more depressing story in urbanism than the fact that people kept cutting down speed cameras in Toronto, and then the premier just… agreed with them and banned speed cameras across the province?

It honestly makes me so mad.
All of Toronto's speed cameras are gone. How did we get to this point? | CBC News
Toronto's speed cameras may be gone, but this time there are no mysterious vandals wielding power tools, no blurry suspect photos and no police investigation.

I know I sound like a broken record on this and that’s OK.

Montreal gets a lot right. But one of my biggest disappointments of this city’s political establishment is saying “no” to an amazing automated train for the underserved east end of the city for largely aesthetic reasons.
The REM is great, but the tragedy might be that expertise fading away without another project

REM de l'Est was rejected because some people disliked the elevated portion above a 6-lane road

When projects get derailed so easily, each new project takes a long time and you always lose your experience

A bad day for Canada, and therefore the world.

Ontario (population 16 million, 40% of the country) has passed new legislation prohibiting bike lanes that take a lane from cars.

An escalation from Bill 212, which required municipalities to get approval.
A sad day for cyclists. Bill 60 - which prohibits the conversion of motor vehicle lanes to bike lanes (or any other prescribed purpose) - has passed Third Reading this morning which will kill various cycling projects in Toronto & across Ontario. #shame #BikeTO #BikeSky #TOpoli #ONpoli #VisionZero

***Exactly*** the result I was worried about with this election.

Not ripping out the busiest bike routes, but sabotaging great projects that are planned or under construction.

While I voted for Projet Montréal for their record on active transportation, one proposal from Transition I appreciated was electoral reform.

Not because I think it will help my policies specifically, but because it’s good for the health of democracy.

I’d like to see other parties get on board.

Ensemble Montréal proposing to remove bike lanes in Parc-Extension. That’s exactly the kind of thing I’m worried about: sabotaging up-and-coming bike-friendly neighbourhoods.
Well, Querbes is very clearly at risk in Park-Extension (this here is from their city councillor). And all the District central bike lanes in Ahuntsic probably.

My biggest worry with an Ensemble Montréal win isn’t a Doug Ford-style attempt to rip out the busiest bike routes in the city like Saint-Denis.

It’s sabotaging up-and-coming bike-friendly neighbourhoods, especially new major structural routes that would be their Saint-Denis.

I *love* this new protected intersection. I think it’s the most exciting new bike infrastructure in Montreal since the REV Saint-Denis.

I sure hope there aren’t any major mayoral candidates planning to pause or remove cycling infrastructure. That would be awfully inconvenient right now.

What a disappointment.

The opposition party, which has a chance of winning Montreal’s next election, has announced that they will start with a 12-to-18-month moratorium on new bike lanes.

Expansion of the bike network is “definitively not our priority” following the election.

That’s why I’ve been rethinking my information diet and relationship with the news.

Here are 8 rules I’ve adopted. Big🧵:

Until recently you might have been able to find support in Canada for tighter integration of some kind.

But after six months of being taunted, threatened, and belittled, and seeing the US turn towards illiberalism at home, most Canadians want to run in the exact opposite direction!
We really should be in a customs and border union with Canada.

Yes to high-rises near jobs and transit.

Yes to mid-rises everywhere else.
Each time I land in Toronto it surprises me why is it that only housing options seem to be single fam house (80% area) or 50 storey buildings.
SAME units in 5 floors next to ea other than 50 ea other block.
Lack of vision & guts.
100% housing needed can easily fit in existing footprint. Q of life.

The US government is like an abusive partner. “Gosh, I only belittled and threatened you for like six months max! Move on already.”

Fundamentally MAGA doesn’t get it because they don’t think foreigners are real people anyway.

The Conservative surge never abated. They did great.

The only thing that changed is that many on the left decided to vote strategically.

I think this was the right thing to do, and also I hate that the electoral system forces this upon us.
