also bored. here's the canadian cities (from apta)

vancouver = 0.507
calgary = 0.410
victoria = 0.278
edmonton = 0.264
winnipeg = 0.259

have to dig around for more ridership data for these two given all the agencies in the metro area, but they're at least this much:

toronto >0.539
montreal >0.424

You know that runner in Toronto that races streetcars? The City put in dedicated lanes on Bathurst, and he re-raced it

“This used to be the slowest route. Now it’s the closest race I’ve done. I never thought I’d say this. But I’m really surprised. There’s hope: for the streetcars and for the city.”

2025 was a rough year for transportation reformers. I spent much of it thinking about ways to build support for car-free streets, transit expansions, bike lanes, etc.

Here are a few stories where I shared what I’ve learned. 🧵

As if baseless attacks against city councillors wasn't enough, Daniel Tate's (lack of) IntegrityTO has resorted to attacking @graphicmatt.com over his recent column showing the city has been getting better. This is why we progressives must organize to stop far right folks like Tate! 🤮 #shame #TOpoli

My personal favorite was finally doing a bikepacking ride up to Portland, Maine! It has me excited for bigger adventures in 2026.

Chow deserves to be re-elected. Nobody else advocates for renters, transit users, and cyclists like she does. Unfortunately, this traffic "czar" is unlikely to improve transit frequency and get cars off the road.

Can you imagine #topoli even entertaining a congestion charge?

This is outrageous, Doug Ford rips out Ontario’s speed cameras and then uses taxpayers money to run ads about nonexistent police, useless signs and speed bumps. He takes from us and then rubs it in our face.

If we are EVER to learn from the disastrous Line 6 opening and (incoming) Line 5 disaster, Toronto must objectively reflect on their history & conception.

@jrurbanenetwork.bsky.social latest piece does exactly that.

These are 2 badly planned, politicized ideas choked by poor delivery & discourse.
I have not been shy on my coverage of transit issues in Toronto. With the disastrous opening of the Finch West LRT in early December, I have some thoughts from Hong Kong using my historical experiences with Toronto in this longform post.

Meanwhile in Ontario, our car-brained Premier Doug Ford continues to prevent Toronto from pursuing congestion pricing despite the overwhelming evidence it works in NYC, London, and other cities around the world. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TTC #TOpoli #ONpoli

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted
