Hi, I'm Quinn, I run a Textile Makerspace and teach data visualization with textiles at Stanford, in a weird job between the library and non-English literatures. I post a lot of fun textile things via #DHmakes, along with digital humanities text analysis stuff, including the Data-Sitters Club.

I got one of the wood lasercut blocks of @queermedieval.bsky.social's to print better: "We can be soft & brave / silly & right" and "hope comes from us" #DHmakes

What a delightful little thing! Would be easy to make and share kits to spread joy if you've got a laser cutter. #DHmakes
I got this awesome pendant that you can stitch words on to but I can’t decide!!! Some examples: www.kerchungcreative.com/stitch

Democratic senators voted to make sure that there was more money for ICE to harass your community
democratic voters wanted their party to shut down the government for myriad reasons — troops in american cities, masked thugs ripping families apart — but dem leaders insisted the wise thing to do politically was to stay hyper-fxated on this one thing, ACA tax credits. and then they just… gave up

Some days, whimsy through gritted teeth is the only whimsy there is.

Will be very curious what adaptations will be required to make this work on a home sewing machine. Is there some new foot or different stitch (and brand new machine) it'd need? Or is it just going to be off the table outside of an industrial context? #DHmakes
a little bit obsessed with the zipper upgrade, and also with the fact that YKK's founding principle is the "cycle of goodness." can I please live in a country where companies believe in the cycle of goodness
The Zipper Is Getting Its First Major Upgrade in 100 Years
By stripping away the fabric tape that’s held zippers together for a hundred years, Japanese clothing giant YKK is designing the future of seamless clothing.

Nothing like playing with a method you don't understand at all, where sometimes you can end up with a whistle, and sometimes you can end up with random plastic drool, and you have no idea why or how in either case, really. 🤔 #DHmakes

Today in DH infrastructure, Voyant was down for a little while. There were tickets filed, and the current maintainer/developer, Andrew MacDonald, brought it back up.

Little acts of care and maintenance everywhere, and I only happened to see through the ghosts of old conversations with Stéfan.

"Candor" always means you made people mad. "Authentic" is the version I hear from students, which always feels like a subtle indictment of how folks in academia tend to communicate.
The number of times I’m thanked for my “candor.”

My local middle schooler was feeling down yesterday. His Minecraft friend on the other side of the country, who gets all his weird in-jokes, who he talks with for hours, wasn't around.

I told him I know that feeling so well, and did at that age too. I'm glad, despite it all, he can have that. 💞💻
It’s common to say that social media was a mistake. I understand that logic.

But in my local context I’ve spent this week in a lot of struggle I cannot speak of.

I’m comforted by the stars of hope on the far horizon, as here night seems without end.

Such stars form constellations to navigate by.

For real, if you can knit, whip up a Portland Frog hat or similar. I wore this it out this morning and the looks of joy on the way, especially from one of the construction workers. It's a small thing to say someone's paying attention to what's going on. #DHmakes swatch.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...

This paper was a delightful read this afternoon! In coding survey responses, they've worked out a taxonomy for different aspects of textile dataviz that I think will be helpful for some of the students in the Data Visualization with Textiles class next spring. Go give it a look! #DHmakes
So excited to be presenting our paper at VIS tomorrow! I have so many gorgeous examples and pictures to share from so many people. Overwhelming thanks to everyone who took our survey, and looking forward to continuing the project soon so stay tuned! #ieeevis #datatextiles #DHmakes #datavis

As of today, YarnLab has a mannequin and some supplies for someone fabricating a metal outfit. They thought the head and hands looked kinda creepy on the mannequin (agreed, tbh) so now they're just hanging out face-palming on the table with the knitting needles and zines and it's great. #DHmakes
