The trauma of famine, especially brutal when man-made, isn't easily forgotten. As a young teenager I had a relative in his 80's who remembered older survivors of the Irish famine from his own youth. The open wounds poisoned GB-IRL relations for a century and a half.
“Six-week-old Yousef's lifeless body lay limp on a hospital table in Gaza City, his skin stretched over protruding ribs and a bandage where a drip had been inserted into his tiny arm. Doctors said the cause of death was starvation.”

Extreme weather expected to increase insurance premiums even further
Policyholders have claimed more than $1.8 billion on insurance due to extreme weather in the first half of this year alone, with the rising cost of cover almost certain to be passed on to consumers.

This story from @nirhasson.bsky.social demonstrates not only the scale of the carnage (at least 4% of Gaza's population) but the truly unprecedented targeting of civilians. Women and children account for 56% of those killed - more than twice their share in Sudan, Syria and Iraq.

the stories that come out of the ICE camps are going to look like the stories that come out of every camp system; rampant corruption, epidemic disease, physical and sexual abuse on a vast scale, a death rate far higher than normal, and medical abuses.

This new Supreme Court ruling does not protect women. It protects a 'barbie doll' image of what women should be. Let me explain:

I was born female. I have female genitals. It says female on my Birth Certificate. I am one of the 'women' this ruling is meant to protect. 🧵

The rules, if you are keeping track:

If a single left activist anywhere in the world says "defund the police," it becomes the official position of the Democratic Party, now and forever.

If the president's top surrogate repeatedly sieg-heils on stage, it's ambiguous, impossible to interpret.

"This tax-and-transfer insurance effect—or the role of the state in reducing adult disadvantages that stem from childhood poverty—matters more than other oft-studied characteristics, such as parental education or marital status, in shaping the U.S. disadvantage compared with peer nations."
Child poverty in the U.S. is four times as likely to lead to adult poverty than in Denmark and Germany, and twice as likely than in the UK and Australia. Why? I write about our findings on "the intergenerational persistence of poverty" today in The Atlantic:
www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Why Poor American Kids Are So Likely to Become Poor Adults
Most scholarship on the subject focuses on conditions during childhood. But government support during adulthood plays the biggest role.
