Opposing US actions in Venezuela isn't about supporting the Venezuelan government, their dictatorship, or human rights violations.

It's about the fact that the US doesn't care for Venezuelans (see: deportations for example). It's about the fact that this isn't about democracy.

We are about to read at synagogues:
"אָרוּר אַפָּם כִּי עָז, וְעֶבְרָתָם כִּי קָשָׁתָה.
Cursed be their anger so fierce, And their wrath so relentless."

Waking up to the criminal imperialist actions of the US in Venezuela. One that our government has admitted is about oil - regardless of what they say now.

Summary abduction is now the primary tactic deployed by the Trump regime in pursuit of both its domestic and foreign aims.

This is not a sovereign government, but a kidnapping syndicate.

I’m thinking this morning about all the people I spoke to last year who were absolutely convinced, and tried to convince me, that Trump would be antiwar compared to Biden and Harris.

In the past week alone he has attacked Nigeria and then Venezuela and also threatened to attack Iran (again).

"הֵאָסְפוּ, וְאַגִּידָה לָכֶם; אֵת אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָא אֶתְכֶם, בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים׃
Come together, that I may tell you; what will happen for you in days to come.“

This line from this week’s parsha (Torah portion), opening up the Birchas Yakov - the Blessings of Jacob to his kids - is a lot what yesterday felt like:

In Mamdani's New York, everyone eats Shakshouka for breakfast. I (mostly) don't make the rules 🍳

Happy Day 2 of a New Era for NYC!

Got a literal front row seat to history in the making --- @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, about to be sworn in as the first Muslim, Democratic Socialist Mayor of NYC, by a Jewish Brooklynite, Senator Bernie @sanders.senate.gov 🗽

#Inauguration2026 here we go!!!

Happy New Year, and welcome to a New Era for NYC!!!

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is Mayor of New York City, and I am one proud New Yorker 🗽

We did this. The people did this.

This made me cry all over again. Worthwhile watch to wrap up 2025.
We did this. NYC did this. Over a million New Yorkers did this. The thousands of volunteers, each and every one of us, did this!!!

Tonight, a 12:01 AM, a New Era for New York, with MAYOR @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social begins 🎉
Before the celebrations on November 4, there were hours of anxious waiting as we watched the numbers come in. Here's a glimpse of the stress and joy alike. Thank you to every New Yorker who believed in this fight for working people. I am so proud to be sworn in as your Mayor.

2025:
How it started / How it's ending

Started: first rabbi to have mayoral candidate @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social at a Shabbat service.

Ending: prepping for inauguration, as a proud New Yorker, and as a member of the Transition Committee 💞🗽

Perfect Shabbos morning: waking up to a magnificent winter wonderland, and the house is filled with the smell of chulent.
Sometimes, it's the small things that dream are made of!

גוט שבת - Shabbat Shalom ❄️😋

PS: Yes, that's ice floating down the Hudson River.

גוט שבת 💞

Since I was a child, I loved snowy Friday nights. It felt like the whole city got dressed for Shabbos ---
A snowy white tablecloth outside, a warm shabbos inside!

Today's kugel for Shabbos journey:
1. Challah kugel
Perfect use for week old challah. First, soaked for a few hours.

Then, mixed with shredded apples
Plus: eggs, vanilla sugar, cinnamon, some oil.

Sprinkled with some brown sugar on top for some crispness.
December 26, 2025 at 10:51 PM
And for absolutely no reason at all (beyond some time off), I am making 5 kugels this week 🤷‍♀️

Might need help eating them all 😉
וביום השבת... ובראשי חדשיכם... אכלו משמנים...

Last night we got to busy well, actually enjoying Shabbos services and then an amazing meal, but here are all the kugel we had!

Top: potato kugel
Center: tzvibel (onion) kugel
Bottom: Yerushalmi (Jerusalem) kugel

More on this tradition 🧵

I like this Nittel Nacht take!
I’d like to give an (admittedly idiosyncratic) reason for why us Jewish lefties should observe Nittel Nacht nowadays: Much of the Jewish world is aligning with Christians because of Israel and Islamophobia.
December 25, 2025 at 12:38 AM
Wishing a meaningful Nittel Nacht to all of us who observe 🫠

For the players:
May all your chess move lead to the perfect checkmate.

For the traditionalists:
Happy toiliet-paper cutting.

For the Medievalists:
Don't believe everything you read in Toledot Yeshu.

Thread ⬇️
Finally, for those who wanna conceive heretics:
May you enjoy your sexual relation tonight...

Okay, for all who have no idea what I am talking about:
Nittel (lit: medieval Latin for Christmas, though common Yiddish etymology is "The Hanged One") is a Yiddish name for Kratzmich (Christmas) Eve.

Now that Chanukah is over, how are you all planning to mark Nittel?!

Looking for new ideas beyond not studying, playing chess, Chinese food, and Kvitlech 🤔

Looking at the full Menorah late last night when lighting at home, this was on my mind:
Life has been far from perfect. For the world as a whole, and for myself personally, in many ways.

Yet just like that we mark Chanukah: filled with light for the good moments, while acknowledging our struggles 🕎
December 22, 2025 at 5:19 PM
Another celebration I marked this Chanukah:
132 months, 4020 days, 96,400 hours, ELEVEN YEARS SOBER 🎉

One of the hardest steps I ever took in my life, yet one the most rewarding.

On Hanukkah 2014 I reached a low point, and that's exactly what placed me on this hard, beautiful journey.
