A life worth celebrating. We should take our holidays on the actual birthday (today) rather than a Monday which just makes it another 3-day weekend. It would heighten the observance of the person or subject honored. MLK’s life is worth studying one day of every year.
Today we honor the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a leader who reminded us that our lives should be measured by how we serve others.
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”
May we continue his work by choosing justice, compassion, and service every day.

This is a really great article about grocery store consolidation and some of the impacts on communities.
In 1952, there were 104 grocery stores in Dubuque (!). Today there are 12. Walmart & Hy-Vee split the market. The Telegraph Herald has an in-depth look at the state of local grocery stores across Iowa & how the demise of Robinson-Patman enforcement fueled consolidation & food deserts.

When it’s cold outside, heat should be used sparingly in public conveyances and other spaces where it is common for people to wear their coats. If people are dressed for 30 or 50 degrees outside, they don’t need it to be 70 degrees in the train, bus, elevator, or entryway. In fact, that’s too hot.

This is sad. We should all be writing and reading more letters. It’s a far better mode of communication with friends and relatives over long distances than text messages or social media posts.
I don't mean to sound quaint, but a functioning postal service is one of the telltale signs of a functioning state. If you overthrow a dictator or declare independence, one of the things you do to show you're serious is take over the postal service.

The amateur historian in me is disturbed by this.

Morning rush-hour near London's Oval station. Trains pass underground every few minutes and there's a continuous flood of bicycles, but still there's one lane of gridlocked traffic. Your city will always have exactly as much gridlock as it makes room for.

For those curious how steep transfer taxes like L.A.'s Measure ULA and Santa Monica's Measure GS impact permitting, look at what happened in Santa Monica after Measure GS was enacted in 2023.

2023: 593 units permitted
2024: 30 units permitted

Poorly designed transfer taxes kill housing.

The coalition behind Measure ULA just released a report attacking UCLA research on the tax. They’re claiming it “debunks” the research. It doesn’t even come close.

Call it Anti-Industrial Policy: we need is a suite of policies to nudge Americans to own and operate more little public-facing businesses. Speciality shops. Six-seater bars. Esoteric services. Restaurants serving two or three dishes. It would lower overall productivity and increase quality of life.

The economy has entered a new phase. The labor market and inflation have cooled in response to a surge in uncertainty and tight credit conditions, while the inflation induced by tariff and potentially higher oil prices is still ahead of us.
