Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz after touring "Alligator Alcatraz": "These detainees are living in cages. The pictures you've seen don't do it just. They are essentially packed into cages. 34 detainees per cage...they get their drinking water & they brush their teeth where they poop, in the same unit"

One underrated aspect of Trump’s deranged letter announcing the 50% tariffs on Brazil is that he’s putting the bootlickers seeking to replace Bolsonaro as the leaders of the “patriota” right in a real bind

This would be the biggest scandal of every non-Trump Presidency, including Nixon’s.
The United States is seeking to steal the sovereignty of Brazil, there's really no other way to describe this. It's an effort to overthrow their domestic political institutions.

We are in new territory with Trump’s latest trade letter, threatening a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil starting Aug. 1
—The US runs a rare trade surplus with Brazil, so there’s no deficit to fix
—Trump says these duties are explicitly over political concerns, not economic ones

Some much needed good news today
[BILL ALERT] AB 130, the budget trailer bill creating a broad CEQA exemption for mixed income and market rate housing, has passed the Assembly floor. It now goes to the Governor for his signature.

I still have battle scars from working on CEQA review for a housing project 1 block away from BART in SF that would’ve replaced a “historic” laundromat. Opponents claimed it would lead to displacement even though it was 25% affordable.

Shabbat Shalom to everyone who recognizes that the safety, freedom & thriving of Jews and Muslims are bound up together — in Israel & Palestine, across the five boroughs, and in many other beloved places.
Lander: "It's just gross, racist bigotry. Meanwhile he's running an optimistic, upbeat campaign for a NY where everybody belongs, and I feel proud as the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in NYC to be supporting somebody who would be the first Muslim mayor—what could be more NYC than that?"

Yes, legalizing the development of apartment buildings in Berkeley (median home price of $1.4M) would tragically lead to the commodification of its land
Janice in District 3 claims the ordinance will "commodify our land" and make it difficult for homebuyers to compete with developers who want to build "different types of housing."

If there's one legacy of the War in Iraq that Democrats should have internalized, it's the fact that those who lined up behind the war drums all came to regret that decision while those who wisely refused to go along were soon vindicated.

One of the latter rode that decision to the White House!
UPDATE — At least *37* members of Congress have now signed on to efforts against the Trump-Vance administration's moves towards war on Iran.

+5 since yesterday.

A new Economist/YouGov poll shows Americans strongly disapprove of US involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran: 16-60

HUGE!!! Senator @scottwiener.bsky.social's SB 79, which the Bay Area Council is cosponsoring, passes the Senate!!! SB 79 legalizes apartments in single family areas near trains. This was a test for the Senate - the Assembly is passing housing bills, so this has a GREAT shot of becoming law!

Building new market rate housing makes housing more affordable through two “trickle down” mechanisms in a demonstrable way:

1. In the short term by reducing pressure on the existing housing stock

2. In the long term by creating new inventory that will become affordable later (aka filtering)
“Trickle-down housing” is the stupidest concept ever.

The straightforward idea that building new housing takes pressure off old housing gets equated with Reaganite tax cuts for rich people.
trickle down housing isn't a real policy- it's a theory used to justify inaction on building for those with the greatest need
