My kids are home for Christmas, and our family has been playing the shit out of Flip 7. It actually knocked Sushi Go out of first place, where it's been for 12 years.

It's a simple press your luck game that is way more fun than a press your luck game has any right to be. I highly recommend it.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

If I could have one wish this Christmas, it would be for peace and comfort to all the children of the world.

If I could have two wishes this Christmas, it would be for all my enemies to have to watch Anaconda (2025) once a day, every day, for the rest of their lives.

The most offensive aspect of Anaconda (2025) is that it contains several scenes in which the characters discuss the elements of a good movie: themes, likable characters, story arcs, etc. And then it doesn't do any of those things.

They clearly knew better. They made it bad on purpose.

I didn't expect to feel this way but 1997's Anaconda deserves better than this.
Going to see Anaconda tonight. It's probably going to be terrible, in which case it will be a worthy successor to the original.

Best: two characters without much screen time trapped in a turbo lift/shuttle/jail cell together

Worst: for some reason, the federation fucking loves slavery.
Best and worst Star Trek tropes?🖖

Best: going back to contemporary times

Worst: holodeck copies of crew mates (Barclay)

So the Cratchit’s had to go buy new pants.

Continuing from this —>
It's true that this is wild to watch. DOJ's social account — and, likely, DOJ — is being run no differently than an online-sleuthing account. (Or, more accurately, an online grift account cannibalizing others' online-sleuthing.)
this is insane to me. the doj had forever to look into this. now they're like liveblogging on x like they have no more information than a random person on social media

Vacation by Deb Olin Unferth. I first read this book when I was 22, and it opened up my mind to what you can really do with writing. This was one of the original touchstones for Night Vale when we started. Still so weird and good.

Speaking of which, I should do my list of books I loved this year. I read 64 books this year. Of those, I loved ten (I try to be really selective on like vs love). Here they are:
About ten years ago, I started keeping a spreadsheet of what I read for diversity (race/gender of author, but also non-US books, non-fiction, stuff like that). I don't have hard rules, but it just lets me know when I'm falling into a rut

You can /argue/ that Coca-Cola invented the modern Santa Claus.

But we can pinpoint the origin of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with total precision.

He was invented by Robert L. May in 1939 for Montgomery Ward as a promotional/coloring book.

Ironically, Robert May grew up secular Jewish.
