This is the largest transit expansion in North America. And in this @macleans.bsky.social Magazine feature, I argue that other cities should be looking at the advantages of light metros like the REM:

do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

CANADA WINS! 🇨🇦

In Fort Lauderdale, the #CanMNT defeated Venezuela thanks to goals from Ismaël Kone and Promise David. The former was sent off in the second half just minutes after the South American outfit lost David Martínez to a red card.

Wild stuff in World Cup qualifying tonight.

As of this moment:

Panama, Curaçao, and Haiti would qualify for men's World Cup.

Suriname and Jamaica would go to the playoff tournament.

Honduras (and Costa Rica) would be out.

My @thestar.com column this week: A third-party review says Toronto’s streetcars are among the slowest in the world. But they don’t have to be.

Maintenace improvements, operational changes and a little political will could really speed things up.

Matt Elliott: Toronto’s streetcars are some of the slowest in the world. Here’s how the city could speed them up
The TTC likes to blame the sluggish pace of streetcars on things beyond its control, but the data tells a different story.

NEW: The #CanMNT face Venezuela tomorrow in their final match without knowing 2026 World Cup group opponents.

Alfie Jones to debut, and hopefully the last match without Alphonso Davies, who Marsch spoke of reintegrating today.

The REM is essential infrastructure — an automated light metro system across Greater Montréal that will connect more and more of the city as it grows.

Great cities have great public transit, and that’s what we’re investing to build more of across Canada in Budget 2025.

FINAL — 🇨🇦0-0🇪🇨

A gritty scoreless draw for the #CanMNT after Ali Ahmed’s red card in the sixth minute.

Canada held just 24% possession, and failed to score on their lone shot on target.

That’s seven straight halves (3.5 games) without a Canadian goal.
