Today at SciPy 2025 we released Icechunk 1.0, an open source package and specification that enables database-style transactions against petabyte-scale array datasets using only cloud object storage as infrastructure. Read about it on our blog earthmover.io/blog/icechun..., or visit earthmover.io
Icechunk 1.0: Production-Grade Cloud-Native Array Storage Is Here - Earthmover
A year ago, we made an important internal decision which set Earthmover on a new course—we decided to refactor and open source our core technology for storing array-based data in the cloud. This took ...

Precipitable water ranking for the June 2025. Wet, from the standpoint of water (vapor). Record values in parts of the Northeast. [Note: precipitable water is the total column water vapor if it were squeezed into a liquid state.]

Consider what a modern miracle public environmental data access is.

Consider what might happen if it ever went away.
So I was able to do a 15 month plot of data from the Rio Ruidoso gage at Hollywood on the USGS site and found that the river did hit about a 16' crest with the debris flow flash flood last year, but it blew 4' past that today. 😱

Today, students in my @ualbanydaes.bsky.social data viz class present their final projects, which wouldn't be possible without the folks at @unidata.bsky.social. The consequences of this administration's attacks on science and education just keep on hitting closer and closer to home.
Unidata maintains a lot of key weather data infrastructure, including the netCDF data standard and libraries, metpy. data dissemination servers for accessing models and observations from NOAA, and educational resources for the university community. Now everyone is furloughed b/c of Trump and DOGE.

Powerful graphic. In a single day on April 25, a DOGE-fueled NSF canceled 340,226 future days of research.

Or 932 years.

[And that’s just one of three rounds of terminations so far.]
For #TidyTuesday this week, we're looking at data on terminations of NSF grants 📊

🎨 Using colour to highlight one category
📈 Transparency to highlight the important data

Cabinet secretaries engaged in a grim game of “how many people can I kill” one-upsmanship
There are few things as cost effective as Narcan, especially in a country where (entirely preventable) opioid overdoses have been a leading cause of death for years. For every 6 kits distributed 1 OD is prevented. The $56M in this grant trained >66K people and distributed >282,500 kits in 2024 alone
RFK Jr. to End 'Godsend' Narcan Program That Helped Reduce Overdose Deaths Despite His Past Heroin Addiction
Despite overcoming heroin addiction himself, RFK Jr. is backing plans to cut a critical Narcan program that helped reduce overdose deaths.

Yea we have the data at NCEI and can build tools, but why reinvent the wheel?

He’s just antivaxx. And like most antivaxxers, he is fully vaccinated so he is only gambling with other people’s lives.
Stop calling this moron a "vaccine skeptic." Skeptics still manage to change their minds when the evidence points them in a different direction. Denialists see the same contrary evidence and dig their ideological heels in deeper.
RFK Jr. said that he plans to roll out changes to the vaccine injury monitoring system, VAERS, in order to find negative impacts from vaccines.

He also said he would create a division at CDC to focus on “vaccine injuries.”

So far, he has overseen the firing of approximately 20% of CDC employees.

If you benefited from the severe thunderstorm & tornado watches & warnings yesterday, call your Congressional reps and tell them to keep the NWS funded & staffed. Last week, NWS were informed that up to 25% of their staff may be let go - this after they were already chronically 10% *under*staffed.
National Weather Service employees were encouraged to take early retirements at an all-hands meeting Thursday. The union believes as many as 1,000 could leave in the coming months - out of a workforce of just over 4,000.

And that "contingency" would need to involve a lot of disk storage ...
Apropos of nothing, thinking of NOAA's PSL site, which if for some reason were to get punted offline because of <waves hands and gestures generally> would be a devastating loss for atmospheric science, and I sure hope that someone more skilled than I has a contingency to try to replicate this stuff.
