I'm in tech support. I'm pretty careful to get really specific about what I do to head off the inevitable "Oh could you help me with my printer?"
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

The other book I read while flying last weekend - @tkingfisher.com 's Snake-Eater. This is in the amazon prime First Reads program this month.
I'm a big fan of her fantasy horror books in general and this is no exception. This one hit a little differently to me, but I really, really like this book.

Did some flying recently - which meant time for reading!
Read @kbspangler.com 's Digital Divide (thanks to @kithrup.bsky.social), the first book in the Rachel Peng series.
I'm hooked. The whole premise is fascinating to me, the characters, especially Peng, are intriguing, the action kept moving.

Another visit to #PaxU in the books, 10 new board games for the game shelves and just in time for the holidays.
And now, brunch.

Officially on vacation. Next stop - PAX Unplugged!

I'm currently in the "Pack all the things so I don't forget the things" stage. Later in the trip will be "I forgot the things" anyway.

This was one of the items I was wondering about as it didn't make sense - the two competing indictments. My guess apparently was what happened - she got the returned indictment with 1 charge rejected and 2 accepted, and edited it to only have the 2 charges.

Justice Department says full grand jury in Comey case didn’t review copy of final indictment
The Justice Department says the grand jury that charged former FBI Director James Comey wasn't presented with a copy of the final indictment.

Senate just passed the Epstein bill via unanimous consent, it's off to the White House.
That turned incredibly fast.

PAX Unplugged badges have arrived!
While I miss living within driving distance of a PAX event, it makes it easier to justify going to Unplugged each year.

A lovely day at the local neighborhood No Kings protest. An encouraging turnout and decent support from those driving past!
A handful of inflatable costumes were present, along with a nice group of young kids leading some chants. And a few dogs who thought they were on the best walk of their lives.

My parents were in the floral industry. My mom had a plan in case I was twin girls (which, okay, weird to have a plan for) to name me Heather and Thistle.
I always felt bad for Thistle, seemed like a name that only exists as part of a pair, while Heather is a stand-alone name as well.
What did your parents almost name you?

If you see this, quote skeet with a screenshot from a video game that released the year you were born

Some of these requote threads aren't great for GenX...

They keep saying "Gold standard science" and I know it's a figure of speech but ya know we stopped using the actual gold standard in economics over 50 years ago because of all the problems and limitations with it

I'm still not really that comfortable admitting I'm over 50, but hey, it's me!
Q: how much is acetaminophen vs. better diagnosis?

RFK Jr jumps in to answer, says it's a 'canard' that has been completely debunked, it's just common sense because you(he) don't see autism in people older than 50!

(autistic people over 50, stand up!)

@scalzi.com said he liked my shirt, achievement unlocked.
A fun time at the book tour stop at Tattered Cover!

This worked like a champ - took longer to fill out the form than it did to wait my turn to get my flu and covid shots, although I wasn't able to get down there until today.
CostCo, Denver area. My wife got hers spontaneously while picking up prescriptions, and I'm hoping to get mine this weekend.

One of my great successes as a parent must be that my exceedingly online Gen Z college-age child has no idea what any of this "Groypers" nonsense is all about.

So the speaker of the house just claimed Trump was an FBI informant about Epstein.
My interpretation of what he really means is - Trump was asked questions by the FBI during the Epstein investigation, and very helpfully answered them.
Questions like "who was at that party with you and Epstein"

My shoulder has been sore for the last 12 hours because apparently I looked at my phone slightly wrong for about an hour.
Starting to think turning 50 was a bad idea.

I was able to get one of these copies. I don't know much about writing book reviews, but I really liked it. I found the premise very interesting and engaging, and it has characters I care about.
I liked it enough that I added the first book in the trilogy to my Wishlist of Books.
Sean's giving away free copies of my book, STONESKIN! Thank you, Sean!!!
Uncached, impulsive US Kindle giveaway: 5 copies of Stoneskin: Prequel to the Deep Witches Trilogy by @kbspangler.com because I love it, and because I keep crying, and because amazon was telling me my CC was bad so I did things until it worked and this is what I bought.

But I do have a meeting set next week.

Our first home PC was the Heathkit version of the Zenith Z-100 PC, which ran Z-DOS, an MS-DOS variant that wasn't compatible with IBM PCs or software, so we didn't have a lot of pre-built software for it. Eventually we got an Apple ][e, but that Z-100 was the first
I'm curious, peeps: what was the first computer you can remember using?

The first computer I would have used would have been the BBC Micro at primary school, but the first computer we had at home was a Commodore 64.

Where to even begin? There's so many.
How about the time I hopped down a flight of 3 stairs, hit my head on the ceiling at the bottom, and landed flat on my back on the tile floor, ending with having cut open the front of my head, the back of my head, and my left elbow.
What's the stupidest way you've hurt yourself?

Oh I'm so glad you asked! I knocked myself out with a frozen bag of omelettes.

I got pretty sick with what doctors are best describing as "not your appendix" for the past week and a half. I've certainly lost track of all the various measles outbreaks out there, but they're not getting much better from what I can see.
